I don't know what others think on this group about this subject but I have been rather annoyed and perturbed by their recent campaign against 4x4's.

After listening to a radio show featuring one of their speakers talking up activists chaining themselves to Land Rover's assembly line I went to look at their website and found a press release covering the item (also subsequent sit-ins at dealerships I think, I only looked at the headings)

It strikes me as belligerent divisive and oafish behaviour to take this course of action and the points made in the statement needed a counter argument. So I spoofed it and sent it to Greenpeace. I guess their response was a sort of 'hmmm' but they gave me permission to link to their press release for a comparison.

In one of their e-mails to me they said they watched for public reaction so if anyone takes the time to read my spoof and the original and feels they have anything to add or reinforce, please drop them a mail.

The original Greenpeace press release, I think best read first, is at

http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/climate/climate.cfm?UCIDParam=20050516075938

My spoof is at http://www.4x4good.bravehost.com/greenpeace_and_4x4.htm

I don't think there are many 4x4 users who are not fuel conscious though there are thousands upon thousands of small economy car drivers who use their cars so much their own health and the health of their children atrophies.

It just sticks in my throat to see a small group of people singled out for vilification because some do not see an attraction others do. Perhaps I'm over sensitive.

If you agree and belong to other 4x4 groups please cross post the link.

Hi Quive,
For an altn. point of view ( that definately has no time for this Govt. or Greenpeace ) look under "4by4 Prejudice" & "BOATs under threat"

Re: Greenpeace

This same rhetoric manifests itself here in California, too. Last year the state legislature discussed a special tax on SUV's. Never mind that many of them get the same or better mileage than luxury sedans or minivans.

Beyond the collision safety advantages that an SUV affords, there are other practical issues that make them attractive. Because of the stifling traffic, many southern California commuters spend upwards of 15 hours per week in their vehicles, so the greater room and comfort that an SUV provides becomes a real quality of life issue.

Meanwhile, the same zealous lawmakers continue to periodically raise the age/weight limit for which children are required to be in special car seats. Currently the limit is 6 years old or 60 pounds. For those who have three children within that range, it is only possible to fit those child seats, three abreast, in an SUV or a minivan. Even most sedans will not accomodate them. On this basis, SUV advocates labeled the anti-SUV legislation as "anti-family." That tactic has, at least for the time being, been effective.
