Hi guys,

Just join the forum and am interested in buying a G, the problem i am having is that no matter how often i look at the figures (BHP, Torque, gearing) on various models none of them really equate to a particularly "easy to live with" machine. I have had a lot of 4X4's so i do have some experience... :? The final drive seems far too low so i would imagine at motorway speeds the engine is going to be working pretty hard, the torque seems to come in at way too high revs to be ideal and horsepower just doesn't seem to be enough to push a brick through todays pollution..... reading some of the forums i am not the only one to think the same. so my question is, are there any options on final drive ratios for the axles, this would at least allow the engine to relax a little. Also from looking on paper the 280 or 300 petrol seems to be the best allrounder given the lack of power and the thirst of the diesels? Would i be right? can some one educate me..... the other possibility (and i am sure i'll be going to the gallows for this) is an engine transplant....possibly a Landrover 300TDI, that can at least return 25ish MPG in a 110 wich is similarly aerodynamic.... any thoughts. Also anyone selling, maybe a 280GE SWB and not wanting a kings ransome. Thanks

Anythings possible with a little money and techno now how. However there are few people that have done it in here and some who dont wish to share the knowledge. First question is why a G Wagen, considering you have done your homework. All of the other Turbo diesel's you have had in the past, try taking the turbo off and see what happens to the engine then. Youll be as frustrated as 300GD owners.

I see you have had or still own a 4.0l jeep so thirst is no strainger to you. 280's are happy buzzing away at 80mph. its doing around 4k but will do it know problem.

How much do you want to spend. If you want something simlilar to your jeep, a 463 G300 petrol is the best bet. One for the best engines merc made. You can put a 2.9 5 cyl sprinter engine in it but most you'll get is 25-27 with an auto box. But its the cost. I would get a petrol and gas it but thats my opinion.
