Worn Suspension Joint
Hi all
My 1989 W460 300gd failed MOT this afternoon due to a worn Nearside front outer swivel joint. Does anyone know where I can source one of these?
Thank you in advance
Colm
Hello Colm,
Swivel joint is not one part on its own that is available for change. Within the swivel joint is basically bearings, housing the wheel bearings, CV joint and king pin bearings.
You need to ask the MOT tester exactly what the wear is, that he has failed. What are the exact words on the failure sheet?
All parts you require are dealer items. You may buy the bearings from a bearings specialist provided you have the bearing numbers. It is much convenient to buy everything you need from the dealer.
If one side is worn, it is logical the other side will be worn. Ideally, you should do this job as a set (both sides). Considering it takes 5.5 hrs per side in labour, the choice is entirely yours.
Thanks Rakesh for your quick and informative reply. The only detail the tester gave me was that it was a worn nearside front outer swivel joint. I live in Northern Ireland so its a Government Testing facility and I can't really pop back in and ask the guy what exactly the issue was.
I have to confess that I would not know one piece of suspension from another. The tester assured me that any mechanic will be able to identify the failing part and my neighbour Peter has furnished me with some exploded diagrams of the axle and suspension of the truck so hopefully the mechanic can identify what part(s) is needed and I can take things from there.
I had a similar sort of issue with the other wheel last year and had to get three bearings replaced if I remember correctly. From your reply and Peters mail I am beginning to think that it might be the bearings also on this side and that the tester might have a similar level of knowledge around g-wagen suspensions as I have.
