Valve clearances, timing chain
Can anyone please tell me what the cold clearances should be for the inlet and exhaust valves for a 300 gd with 617 engine?
Also has anyone any tips on changing the timing chain please ?
Any info much appreciated !
Rowland.
Just about to do mine - .10 mm inlet, .35mm exhaust (.30 for oh-so-rare turbo version).
Can't help with timing chain, but if you can wait 24hrs I could send you the pages from workshop manual.
Good thread here though http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/107729-valve-adjustment-om615-616-617-fyi-7.html
Hello Rowland,
Valve clearances checked on a cold engine is 0.10 mm for Inlet and 0.30 mm for exhaust valves.
For instructions on renewing the timing chain, send me your email address on my PM, I am unable to send any files on the PM.
But why do you think that, the timing chain needs renewal? Does it rattle? Is your oil pressure OK? What mileage has your engine covered?
What about the condition of the timing gears and slide gears? Any consideration there?
Cheers,
Hmm.. looking online in a couple of places, it seems as though there is some inconsistency within MB documentation for outlet clearances between .30 and .35 for N/A and turbo 617
I haven't got workshop manuals here tonight and I was quoting from memory, but I was sure that my handboox said .35 for N/A
I'll check again tomorrow.
.30 for NA from the manual for sure
All the underseal fumes and welding have scrambled your brain Ben ;) lol

You could well be right Gav, my handbook confirms.
The only get of out jail wildcard is that workshop manual does state .35 when engine is warm (60C +/- 15C) (attached) . My guess is that this is where the discrepancy/ confusion with other posts online is.
just for clarification are the valve clearances on my 617a (cold) inlet .10 exhaust .30 ?
geting confused adrian
Thanks very much for the info, would be great if you could forward anything further.
Will get chain on tuesday so no rush.
Many thanks
Rowland
