Vacumn Shut off
The Vacumn Shut off that sits on the injection pump, are these all the same for basic engines (603 etc) and can they be bought from a Motor Factor or is it MB only?
Thanks
Hi
Straight forward this one.....
Part Number A000 070 46 53 £20.30 + VAT MBUK have 22 in stock and have sold 100 in the last 12 months.
There are dealers all over the country showing stock also including Derby, Manchester and Sheffield
They fit most of the OM601 OM602 OM603 OM661 OM662 and some OM605 OM606 models also.
So most of the diesel vans and cars from early 80's thru to mid 90's.
Cheap enough to replace but usual fault is the diapragm goes weak and will not shut off.
A small jubilee clip round the manual shut off lever usual adds sufficient weight to help the diaphragm shut off.
Could also be a vacuum pipe leak in the piping from the plunger on the steering lock assembly that activates the shut off.
Hope this helps

I had this a couple of months ago and had to open the bonnet to turn the engine off manually ever time I stopped, but it was really cheap to fix so good luck
Also had this problem a couple of months ago and meant to send in a thread and pictures but purely due to cosmetic reasons - my original vacuum unit was of metal construction - the replacement is white plastic and looks tacky and so out of place under the bonnet on top of the injectors... Hey ho, it works though (or at least stops the engine working!?!).
Easy to feel if vacuum loss in pipes - if pipe from top of unit has 'suction' on turning off chances are it is the unit.

Hi
They have been the White plastic alternative since around 1993 ish!
The metal ones are better looking and judging by your being the original fitment, better built as well. The plastic ones tend only to last about 5 years or so, but keep your reciept as they have a 2 year warranty and early failure has been known.

Hi, I have just started having the same problem, however it's intermittent sometimes it turns off sometimes it will not, also sometimes it nearly shuts down but not quite and if you lift the accelerator peddle that is Sufficient to lower the revs and shut off the engin, is it the unit or a vacuum leak and how do I find out? Any help would be appreciated.
Sounds like you have the same issue
Faulty vacuum box
Is it possible to repair or defiantly a replacement job,
Hi
Replacement only really and they are cheap enough
If its a OM602 or OM603 engine then part number is A000 070 46 53 and £20.30 + vat MBUK have stock
There are the vacuum feed pipes that come from the steering lock but it is usually the diaphragm.
I have seen people fasten a small jubilee clip to the stop lever just to add extra weight to help the diaphragm but it will still fail and for the money is not worth messing with.
If you have been messing around behind the dash you may have dislodged something?

Hi Gav, thanks for that, it is a 1989 300GD where do I find the reference number, thanks Paul
Hi Paul
That should be a 3 ltr 5 cylinder Deisel on that year...
You can PM me your chassis number or...
It should start 460 332 or 460 333 or the engine number on the log book should start 617 931
This will be A000 070 50 53 £20.30 + vat MBUK have stock
It could also start 463 327 or 463 328 with the engine number on the log book starting 603 931
This will be A000 070 46 53 £20.30 + vat MBUK have stock
PM me if your unsure
Gav
Hi Gav,
Thanks for that, the chassis number starts with 460332, however I have orderd the other part, will it fit or will I have to change it ? thanks again. Paul
Hi Paul
No, you need the other one, that truck will have the OM617 engine in it, if you get any hassle returning it, i am always needing one, so could take it off you
Gav
Hi Gav,
Many thanks for all your help, il keep you posted.
Paul
Hi Gav, no joy I'm afraid, I changed the part, quite a loose connection on the new vacuum, seemed ok to start with a little slow to stop but it did, then drove about 5 miles then exactly the same problem, I have noted the stop lever is very stiff and you have to push it all the way down for the engin to stop, I can't see any loose connections anywhere, if you have any more ideas I'd be glad to hear them, thanks Paul
Hi Paul
Sorry for the delay, missed your post!!!
Can you PM me your email address and if possible your chassis number, i have some info i can send you.
Gav
Hi all thanks for all the info on this one especially Gav, turns out to be a small split in one of the vacuum pipes, a simple fix once found.
Thanks as ever, will investiagte when I pick car up, but owner says engine not turning off.
