My 280 failed its MOT because the track rod ball joint rubber boots were perished, nothing wrong with the ball joints themselves.  MB only sell the whole assembly at around £200.  I found these on ebay.  A good fix for £6.45.

Let us know when you have successfully fitted them and which size it was.

My 230 460 GES failed its for the same reason - rubber boots rotted out.

What the fail notice did not reveal was that on close inspection the ball joints were rusty so it was a new drag link and track rod, not inexpensive!!!

I also learnt that failure of these ball joints can be catastrophic.

I have used rubber track rod end dust seals obtained from  parts department of local tractor dealer. Good tight fit were those for a Massey- Ferguson 135. They are very tight to get on but are good. I think they were £1.60 each.
