My G has developed a steering shudder, its not a constant shudder, but when you hit a bump on the motor way you get a we wiggle off the steering wheel, now this is not unusual or worrying. However the one time the shudder just got worse and worse until I couldnt phisically hold the steering wheel, this happened in a matter of seconds and I had to nearly do an emergency stop on the motorway to kill the shudder!

Its not a wheel balance issue, or a tyre issue, I'm just not 100% on what it could be!!

Re: Steering Shudder

For W463 it's known as a ''DEATH RATTLE'' !
Been discussed a billion times.

In the search box lookup steering damper, on one of my old posts you'll catch the heavier version 'steering damper' Part number you need. Around £100 I think or so.

I have one that has 15,000 miles on it in a box if needed,

p.s Did it happen at around 60-70MPH?

Re: Steering Shudder

Mine is a 463 and does it when I brake hard. Have just put up with it but if I can sort it that would be good

Re: Steering Shudder

Just had the brakes completely redone which I thought might have solved the problem, so no not brakes. Steering damper could be a possibility as have done nothing to steering yet so worth a look.
Thanks for putting your post and reminding me I should be doing something about it!

Re: Steering Shudder

Wholly smoke, I did the search, there is a lot of information on this!! So it looks like there is three, thin one, thick one and one for a G400> I take it out of the three I’m looking for the heaviest duty of them all!!

   A  000 463 66 32  is the part number for the 463 steering damper (50mm)
I bought one this week and they are GBP 118 + vat ...your ABS should vibrate the brake pedal if you brake hard enough to lock a wheel

Steering damper...I was aware that there is a standard and heavy duty one availble but the G400's damper is a new on me. The h/duty one is almost double the price of standard.

Cheers,

Re: Steering Shudder

Is it really that easy to change? Oddly enough, for the first time ever, I had the same problems as you whilst driving it this morning at about 60mph. Had to change down rapidly and then it was OK once I speeded up again.
Am going ot have a look at the workshop manual to see if I can do it myself....

Re: Steering Shudder

Can't see why you would need a heavy duty one - that would just be masking some underlying issue. Unless its for real 4x4 use where I could see the little one getting bent up too easily.

Re: Steering Shudder

When you run big tyres on the G and use it off road it is quite difficult to keep the wheels in balance. I find that the heavy duty damper helps to keep the vibration in check at higher road speeds and lasts longer.

Re: Steering Shudder

I've got a spare thin one if anyone is interested. Had it on the G for a few months then bought a fat one
