Hi all you clever g wagon folk i need to pick some brains please.I have a project in mind; a forestry G,that will not need to be road legal and ultimately have a monster winch [not sure front or back or perhaps both]and a small hiab mounted in the back,2 tonnes @1.5m reach ish .     I have a swb rolling chassis with the remains of a body,[it'll end up as a crew cab],no engine no gearbox, engine bay stripped,no electrics, nothing. Is there any reason i wouldnt buy a cheap ssangyong, strip it and plonk all the gubbins from that into the G?If so which engine and gearbox[are the gearboxes the same as the G boxes?] are best,i.e which of the diesel ssangyong models to go for and what if any modifications required?cheers.nick

Re: ssangyong

As far as i can tell any NA Musso has an MB I5 lump that with some minor parts being swaped fits fine. Is a mechanicallly controlled pump so no wiring issues or follow this link into clubgwagon for a 2.9TD drop in.

I have been keeping an eye on prices and a late 90's Musso seems to go for £400-£600 depending on spec. The problem seems to be you can break them for around that so no Mot or major work for an MOT dosen't mean they go cheap they seem to get broken!

Re: ssangyong

i recently imported over a complete musso 2.9td engine . paid about 680 pounds for it in the uk. its code numbered 662. you will need the sump and oil pump, time cahin cover from a 602, or 605 engine  found in the c class, w124 , w201 etc...

pretty easy swap.

i used the 5 speed gearbox from the w124 250D inc the clutch and flywheel. this gearbox can carry the torque of 300 lb ft.

the 662 can easily be tweaked to give over 200 bhp !

i have a 606a in my cabrio G and hope to get 400 bhp by the summer....!!! [watch this space....]
