Hello All

More a query this one.

The top of my standard (i.e. single) rear door on my 1985 SWB 460 has alwyas stuck out slightly.

This is still the case even following a significant restoration during which I had the back cut off and a new rear end put on. We are talking about 5-8mm out at the top right  (and top left, but slightly less) but pretty flush at the bottom. (bottom meaning across both hinges)

The guys checked the alignment and are confident it is on OK, and when we tried to adjust the top hinge there was no real play left in it. Now this aint the end of the world, and I have read that if you set the door a bit high, or do the initial fit with the rubber on, it can do this. So I simply stopped bothering about it.

However the new rear end has some extra holes in it and I came across the Ball Pivot bracket kit to help 'rear door fit and alignment'

http://www.eurotruck-importers.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPat...

So my question is does anyone know if this will help 'toe' the top of the door in? I do realise that the top of the door may simply have been subject to some 'mechanical' forec at some point, and that a more concerted effort (we last had a go at it when I turned up to pick it up at 7:30 pm at the garage, so it was a quick - lets see if this works approach) might sort it, without shattering the rear glass of course!

But if this will help as well I may as well just get one - It says they are standard on later 460's and the new rear end on mine (OEM from Merc after 4 months!) will be for the later model.

Hope thats clear

Ta

Simon

5 -  8 mm extrusion sounds excessive, perhaps the top section have been bent outwards? Photos would be a great help.

sometimes caused by the weight of a larger than standard spare tire on the back.

some early 460's never had a striker on the top part of the door as found on the 463 and very well thought out too...

competent bodyshop job if you ask me.

Re: Rear door alignment - Thoughts

Hi to you both.

Comments appreciated and I will try to get a pic - note to self, don't post whilst manic! - of the current door position.

There is no strike plate at the top of the door, but there are holes for soemthing in the new back end - hence why I was looking at the part in the link above.

Rear wheel is a original & standard steel one (I just cross my fingers and trust the BF all terrains are as strong as their reputation!!)

I have tried to attach a pic of the car mid resto so you can see what I mean by new back end. I will try to get pics of the top of the door and the various 'new' holes in the new rear.

Many thanks again

Hi Simon

The Door Striker for the later model 460's and 463's is readily available from MB Germany

I can understand that it can be used to adjust the door in and out b ut if you already have a door that is sticking too far out without any of this fitted, i can't get my head around how this could bring it back in?

Picture attached with part numbers and current prices, only cheap money

Hi Gav You are on the same page as me ref that updated striker. The more I look at it, I think the main strike plate is a factor? The item listed as 83 is worn to the bare metal, and on closer inspection the door is out 3(ish) at the lock point, but I can't get the main lock plate item 122, to loosen off at all. A more considered look and play is called for I think. And I know enough not to loosen the rear door by yourself as I now think the way forward is going to be a combination of lock, strike plate and at least the top hinge. Thanks for looking into that for me. I suspect I will be back for a new strike plate. Ta Simon
