Draining the rad this morning to start work on the steering pump swap, the bolt tore out completely from the base of the radiator :-(

Just working out my options this afternoon, I've been wondering whether to jusr replace with another 300GD radiator, or to upgrade it - preempting the 606 swap that I'm going to do in the coming months.

Obviously switching it now for something else *could* turn out to be a big job, especially because its likely to mean I have to change the oil cooler at the same time.

One option is to stick to MB parts though and fit the rad and bits from the 300TD, but looking at the EPC doesn't really give me enough of an idea around how it is plumbed in - it uses a separate tank for expansion for example. Does anyone have any experience with it?

The other option is to have something fabricated. I am quite tempted by this idea as apart from anything else it means I can have it built to allow for a couple other things I have in mind (front mounted cooler for W/C intercooler for example). I'd probably also go the route of electric fans and dispense with the visco all together.

How about others who have done a 300GD > 606 upgrade - what solution did you go for?

Re: Radiator options

A W210 E300TD rad is too wide for a G, I opted for the 3 core upgrade to the existing rad as per Axel's advice, 265 plus vat at Gloucester rads, nice tidy job, simple to swap/fit as existing mounts/oil cooler etc all remain the same, so retaining the factory fitted look, (which I like).

Re: Radiator options

 hi

same thing happened to me last week

its actually quite easy to weld it back in place (which i didnt do it b/c my radiator guy was not here )

being quite a lazy guy i didnt go and look for someone else i just used rapid metal epoxy adhesive to put it back

its ony been 1 day since i did it and didnt drive it much to see if it will hold it
i dont advise doing it this way but its up to you

welding it back would be much better choice and it shouldnt cost much

Re: Radiator options

Just got off the phone with Alex at ProAlloy - http://www.proalloy.co.uk/ and I think I am going to get them to fabricate me a new dual flow rad and oil cooler constructed to take advantage of all of the available space and with the ability to bolt a transmission and chargecooler on the front when I do the 606 upgrade next year.

I'm going to upgrade the pipework to stainless/ PTFE at the same time I think as that will also make the transplant more straightforward when the time comes.

In terms of layout, I could just copy the 300GD with the oil cooler at the side. The other possibility is at the bottom or even in front of the main rad. For UK conditions, position probably isn't as critical I know but at some point we might venture somewhere a bit (lot) hotter so it will be important then.

I know that the 463s have a different layout to the side mount 640 and I just wondered wether that might be a better bet?  The problem is that other than the EPC picture (attached), I don't have any clear idea of how they are fitted (or even where) - does anyone have any pictures to hand?

Re: Radiator options

The 350GD has the oil cooler fitted in the right fender. The air enters around the headlight  and exits the vent on that side of the G. That triangle shaped piece in the EPC image (far right) is what channels the air to the side vent.
