Hi Everyone!
I'm new to GWOA. I'm in the Highlands of Scotland and have a 1999 G500 SWB. Not much else to say!
Question - has anyone upgraded their headlights on a W463? Is it ok to fit higher wattage bulbs in the standard headlights (for off road use only of course . . . . )? Cheers.

Re: Newbie with GWOA

Hello huwbanister,

Sorry if this seems a rushed draft, but I have already lost one drafted reply to you, I almost at the end of all I was going to say, and now I have lost it all.  I hope, I touch on, all I covered on before.

Effectively, you can not get bulbs any higher rated than what you already have, to fit any higher would contravene the MOT regulations.  To meet your requirements, you need to fit auxiliary driving lights.  these are no more than 55 watts rated, but it is the reflector design that does the job you want it to do.

On the market, there is a vast range of lamps available and that is also reflected in their prices.

Welcome to the GWOA, by the way.

Cheers,

Re: Newbie with GWOA

Hi there and welcome to the GWOA.

I fitted 100w bulbs to my 463 and they have made a noticable difference especialy when on high beam which I always thought was pretty poor.

I had one of the 7.5amp main beam fuses blow a couple of times so I replaced them  both with  10amp fuses and have had no problems since.

I spend a fair bit of time in Strathspey & Sutherland so maybe I will see you around the Highlands some time.

Hello and welcome nice to see another member of the Wood and Carpet Brigade and especially the POWER division! :)

Have you had your 500 long or is it a recent purchase?

Re: Newbie with GWOA

Thanks everyone for your welcomes and advice on lights.

The G500 is a fairly recent acquisition and joins an ML320 and an SLK55 AMG (great fun in the summer!).

Cheers for now.

Re: Newbie with GWOA

Hi
Also new for 2011. Based iIn Hampshire with 300GDS owned since 1st Jan. Have already broken it! (Rear nearside shock mounting now in two bits) Going to be back on the road this week.
What about Xenon bulbs?. Got a classic Saab 900 and they have made a huge difference to that. Not an expert but rating the same I think. Just one hell of a lot brighter. I can actually see now driving in the dark
Cheers

Re: Newbie with GWOA

Thanks you'll for advice re lights. Decided to stick with standard bulbs in headlights. Did change them though to Philips X-treme power and cleaned up all the contacts. Also changed H3s in front fogs to Osram nightbreakers and realigned. Big difference overall now - can see where I'm going up here in the NW Highlands - particularly important with the number of red deer we get on local roads after dark!!
