Hello all, I have just purchased a 1985 4 door auto box petrol G wagen. It is in metallic bronze in pretty good condition but it has been standing for a while through lack of use. I am going to do a body off resto and bare metal re spray.Im a sprayer by trade so if anyone has got any paint queries feel free to pm me and I'll do my best to help!

Hi And welcome. Any chance of posting up some pictures, like a before and after?

Is this your first G?
What part of the country are you located?
Will you be off roading in it?

Once again, welcome!

Re: newbie

 Welcome to the GWOA,

I am sure your skills would benefit our club and Thank You for offering your expertise; I have no doubt you will get enquiries coming in.

I have a question already for you.  Rust treatment: I know it could be like cancer, it may come back unless got rid off down to bear metal but my question is, are rust inhibitors effective?  I am under the impression that, the inhibitor is effective but, from the point of spraying finishing paint over it, the effectiveness is lost as chemical reaction of the overcoat or other paints cancels the protection provided by the inhibitor chemicals.  How true is this point?

Looking forward to restoration.

Cheers.

Re: newbie

Thanks for the welcome!! Im in north Suffolk and I wont be off roading it!! ( I recon the 2 doors are better for that!). As regards to rust prevention.......I'll let you know in due time as the G has rust on the back door, around the front screen surround and on the rear n/s cill.
Ive always been one for grit blasting, cutting out the cancer and repanneling. But I've decided that I am going to get the G dipped as seen on various classic car shows. Ill be taking various pics and will post them.
I cant see anywhere that supplies repair panels? Are they hard to source?

Re: newbie

Many parts are largely dealer parts, some after market products are available.  I'll post a link for you a little latter, after looking up the link myself, which I had lost a lot of information on my computer crash a while ago.

The link I will provide are limited in parts but, I know from the forum these parts have had complaints in that, these are not quite perfect as people have had to work the parts in order to make use of them.  Largely the parts which are available are the rear quarter upper and lower panels, wheel arches and other small items.

Major parts such as doors etc, are dealer items

It would help your cause if you could put you chassis number as part of you thread signature, in that way helpers assisting you in you queries you might have can provide with accurate info. and parts info.  You will find dealing with your local dealer, that, they can't do diddly without this info, so have that with you before even dialing their number.

Cheers,
