I've just gone mad and bought a 1982 280GE LWB. It's right hand drive and I live in the south of France, but it was local...

It's only got 26000 on the clock and I think it may be correct, the interior is very tidy and the seats are unworn.

My first job was tackling the loose fan belt, which was a bigger job than I had thought. I ended up removing the alternator to get to the rear bolt on the alternator support bracket as it wouldn't pivot, now its tight but screeching, I think its completely the wrong belt so I'll search for the correct one.

The car is a green colour which is cleaning up ok. It has very bad rust on the nearside rear quarter, which seems to be a common problem so I'll look to change this out, the petrol cap side is ok.

I checked out the rear shock absorber supports and there is no sign of rust there, so good news.

It needs a new rear light and the exhaust is blowing at the rear. So not too bad.

There is rust in the sills and where the front wing meets the side panel, but I don't think these are structural? so maybe I can just use filler and fibfre glas?

I've attached picture so watch this spece for progress!!

Re: My Project

The usual rusty areas aren't structural and it has a separate chassis, all of it is curable given time and money. The worst place is if it's in and around the screen as this most definitely is structural. Is it auto or manual?

Re: My Project

there are a couple of points below the screen on the seam where it is starting to bubble but it doesn't look too bad, maybe famous last words!

It's a manual.

Re: My Project

Well I've been doing a lot of reading on this site, a mine of information. Maybe there is too much bodywork to do on this one for me as I have very little experience of this, might be better to sell this one on and buy one  with less to do? Any views?

Re: My Project

Depends on your expertise. If you fancy a challenge, then go fo it, however if you good mevhanically and not good bodywise, wouldsuggest go with your feelings. If you want to do some off roading then good body work will help. There are a few around with better body work but mechanics are poor.

Hope that helps
