What MPG should my 280 GES be returning?

It is used for lots of short journeys on B and unclassified roads.

Re: MPG

Ok, it is running right then.  I am getting about 100 miles from £50 of fuel.

Re: MPG

remove as much weight as you can, spare wheel, bullbars etc might help but not by much.

Re: MPG

my 5 speed manual SWB 280 does 15-18mpg on short runs on country roads and I have had 20mpg on long runs not exceeding speed limits.

Re: MPG

Hi ChrisG
280 manual far easier to manage fuel consumption than automatic which is continually shifting gears when used on narrow roads..also the cold start revs drop a lot quicker when the ambient temperature is high.I have had 22mpg over sixty miles @ 56 mph.... IT'S ALL TO DO WITH THE RIGHT FOOT!!!

Re: MPG

Well the second question relates to the fan.

My fan is always going round even when the engine is cold.  Is this correct?  Could the coupling have gone?

Re: MPG

hi Dan,

the way to test if your fan coupling is working:

before starting the engine, try to rotate the fan: i should spin easily.

drive for a while heating the engine as much as you can and then stop:

try moving the fan again: if the engine was given a bit of a wellying, it should be stiff and difficult to move the fan.

++++

If it makes you feel any better, my 300TD also makes a lot of fan noise and the coupling IS working. If it really bothers you, I suppose fitting an electric fan is the way to go. Just make sure that the cut-in temperature (i.e. when the fan is switched ON) is about 5 degrees lower than what it is when the coupling goes into full lock-up (the reason is because engine-driven fans provide a LOT more cooling power than electric ones do and you'll need a head-start with an electric one).

hope than helps,
ph

Re: MPG

Hi Fixwin

You're not wrong! Just back from 220 mile motorway trip in my 500SE (W126) and thanks (presumably) to much 50mph roadworks got 28.8mpg measured from brimmed tank to brimmed tank. Would have said that was impossible but there you go!

I'm constantly asked why I run 20+ yr old  'G' and 'S' class as daily drivers cos people seem fixated on fuel economy but as a low annual mileage driver, IMHO the extra fuel cost is still hugely outweighed by zero depreciation. Bought my 460 from a dealer 10yrs ago for £2,500 and I guess it's still worth that today. Both vehicles still very good at what they were made for. Thank you Mercedes.

Apologies if this is a little off-topic.

Chris
