Korando similar to G wagon??
What are the similarities, if any between the G Wagon and the Ssangyong (Daewoo) Korando?
My 2001/51 Daewoo Korando has a 2.3 petrol merc engine, made under license by Ssangyong . I believe the brake pads, and presumably some of the brake parts are interchangeable with mercedes parts.
Certainly the G Wagon and Korando have a similar look about them.
Even this website has a remarkable similarity to the ssangyong owners club website!
The merc engine is a delight.
Unfortunately Daewoo have abandoned the Korando and the Ssangyong dealer I contacted recenty had no knowledge of the Korando model !! He wanted a small fortune to service the car.
Any information regarding relaible service and service part numbers eg oil filters would be most welcome . (Nottinghamshire / Lincolnshire area).
I can't speak for the Ssangyong other than knowing that it uses a Merc engine. But the main points of the G are.
built like a tank: the G is by and large hand built. The only production car which is more hand built is the Rolls. The metal on the G is about twice as thick as on most cars.
solid axles: these are superior in off-road conditions and provide maximum clearance over rough terrain
3 dif locks: the G is the only production vehicle to come with 3 diff locks. Some have rear, and even far fewer have read and mid. But none have 3. Again makes the G go places off-road than others can't.
approach/departure angle the G has an excellent approach/departure angle
But now just re-reading your post realising that this wasn't really what you were asking....
My understanding is that most Merc dealers can service the Ssangyong.
Or if you do servicing yourself, just see that you've got another vehicle availble to use...
Then take out all the filters out of the SSangYong and wipe them with a rag - the part numbers should all be on them - will mostly be Mercedes numbers but if not, take them to a good motor factor who'd be able to cross-reference them for you to something like MANN, KNECHT, FRAM, etc. If you haven't got any luck, send me a message with the part no's and, given sufficient demand, I can source reputable quality filters from other parts of the world.
The Korando and the Musso definitely use Mercedes engines and gearboxes. Possibly axles as well. I don't think that it uses a G-Wagen transfer box (this is a Steyr-Puch designed part).
To be able to know what we are talking about we need you to let us know the part / serial numbers of:
engine
gearbox
transferbox
front axle
real axle
Once we know them, we can crosscheck these with those of the G-Wagen and can tell you whether your truck shares service parts with the G-Wagen.
In any event, you wouldn't want to have your truck serviced in a Mercedes garage. They are the most overpriced bunch oif ignorants that I have ever encountered in my whole life. You'd be better off taking your car to a non-factory Mercedes specialist. They are normally less expensive and much better.
Regards,
I had a ssangyong musso. the only similarity is the engine and auto gearbox. the axles are dana 40's (made in usa) . My musso was a 320 petrol. It flew. but the quality was very poor, in fact yeah a lot of similarites to new mercs????
Many thanks for your responses. Merc dealer says he will not service my car . But has provide a price for oil filter. But not sure if i have given the right part number. I will have look for engine and other part numbers and post here.
I am sure members of the ssangyong owners club will share an interest
