Intercooler install and pics
As promised some pictures of the intercooler and pipework installation . The cutting , welding and making good are not difficult if you have a 115mm a/grinder and mig set . This resolves the problem of the pressure pipe crossing the top of the engine or trying to use 250td under bumper coolers and plumbing , while also achieving the use of a larger cap cooler and a vastly superior flow without restrictions. Many light commercial coolers can be used including the humble transit one .
Inlet manifold is from n/a 602 with the air cleaner replaced by alloy plenum. A 61mm straight through single silencer stainless system keeps back pressure down. The 662 PES55 bosch turbo injection pump has been set to max road use compatable with an accepable tickover [ 700 ] , black smoke limited to a good puff on gearchange. EGR has been deleted . Waste gate adjustable with m/sport airbleed valve . Boost is quick ,7psi @ 1250 , 15 @ 2500 , 21 @ 3300 . Pyrometer reads to 875 F on hard pull @ 3300rpm .Feels like 160 bhp + , holds 90 on mway , pulls hard to 100 mph max .
Thanks for the fabrication of course to Mike Axel-Berg who enjoys the challenge of fitting upgraded OM 60# into anything. He even has a forklift with an oe OM617 in.He says that is all that those old all iron engines are good for !

Thanks for the info you have been posting on this conversion.. the more pics the better!
Did you consider a water intercooler as an alternative? I'm pretty sure that's the route I'll got for my 606 conversion with a barrel style inline cooler and electric fan/ rad in the same position you have the aircooled one.
Having seen and driven this, I can confirm its a really neat installation and goes like something possesed, not too noisy just steady power all the way, many thanks for being allowed to drive such a unique G.
Does anyone still have the pic's from this post? I can't seem to get them to come up. Thanks for any help

Unfortunately not, Mr Bruegger sadly passed away in early 2014 :0(
Not much GWOA Admin can help with either for those pics. Lets see if there is something else around.
The installation shown follows european practise.I have only seen pics of water to air i/coolers in US forums, so no comment.
