Hi all,

I've been on the look out for a tidy short wheel base G for a few years now and finally decided to "scratch the itch" and I'm very pleased I did! I went in pretty blind, but I swatted up on this site and I felt I had absorbed a bit of what to look out for! I feel that it's going to become an expensive habit though... I'm already contemplating a full re-build this winter, so if anyone could recommend a good body shop in the Cambridgeshire area that would be great! For a 280 it doesn't seem all that bad on fuel so far either?! However I am only using it on a daily 4 mile round trip.. Such fun to drive though, quite nippy and built like a tank! :) It's a shame they stopped building the short wheel base like this. Mine came fitted with a "sports exhaust" though, which drones a little too much... So if anyone has a decent back box they want to sell let me know!

 Cheers, Rob

Hi and Welcome,

Congratulations on the new addition! Look forward to seeing it in the flesh. Maybe the AGM?

Hi,

Thanks Spider1V, when and where is the AGM? I'm based near Eltisley just outside St Neots.

I don't know if it's too far for you, but I have my G looked after by an excellent guy in Rushden. They use a local paint shop which did on my SL. The work was good and reasonable priced. I'll give you the details if you are interested.

Cheers,

Ian

Hi Ian,

That would be great thanks. Are they fairly efficient? By which I mean, do they take forever?

Re: Hi from Cambridge

Not sure if they have a backlog. Best if you give Paul a ring. Paul is the Techie who works with the famous HA Lock of Rushden. He is also MB trained and a G nut. I'll pm you his mobile and I'm sure he'll give you the shop details. If you're looking for someone to look after your G, I would 100% recommend Paul.

Re: Hi from Cambridge

The Lotus Elite Garage in Harston  (Elite Motor Group 01223 870022) did a good job at a reasonable price on my 300GEL.

I also have a 280 GES.  I'm in Whittlesford - we must get together.

Re: Hi from Cambridge

Sorry, forgot to add re attention to G in Cambridge area:- Elite is for bodywork.  For servicing/repairs etc use C and V Motors at Swavesey - one of the owners (Colin) has a G and the chief technician (Terry) is very clued up on G's.  They are mercedes specialists and I go there rather than to the main dealer (Robinsons in Cambridge) although the parts department at R are very agreeable (ask for Babu or Chris).
