Currently Going through second set of rear spings in 5 years, Last replaced with MB originals 5 years ago at eye watering cost. Now one of the rear spings broke again for unknown reasons ( No overloading or off roading)
So far my attempts to obtain  repalcement spings from local motor factors not succesful and I have received twice the wrong spings. Last one seems two thick to sit properly on the base. For your info,  MB original inside diameter  is 149 mm, replacement part: that I was sent is:  140 mm.
Any idea why the spings broke ?
Any suppliers near Northampton who can actually deliver the right part, befor I spend my children's inheritence  with Mercedes??
Any idea what is the diffrence in dimension between heavy duty and standard spings ??
Thank you for your assistance in locating a suitable replacement set.

Re: HELP !!! NEED NEW REAR SPINGS FOR 460 SWB 280 Ge.

broken rear spings are very common on G's !! they are progressive which means the end of the coils are thinner and absorb general road irregularities... the centre of the spring is thicker and so carries the heavy loads. main reason for breaking is rust, and this is beacause the debris an road road muck build over the years.. best to really keep the underside steamed washed before and after the winter..

do you carry heavy loads or pull a trailer ? if so, go for heavy duty springs ....

guido at industrytools24 is a mad german that knows ALOT about G's !! contact him, he has new springs at realistic prices. send him your chassis number and can arrange the rest for you. you will need to pay him in advance, but dont worry, he is very very honest and known globally by the G COMMUNITY !

good luck.

Hi

Depending on your chassis number MB list at least two different springs fro the rear of the 280GE.
There is a chassis serial number change around serial number 042xxx approx 1986.
If you are upto you will have one size, from the other, not with standing a 25+ year old truck may not be original
and has more than likely had numurous sets of rear springs and maybe spring locators aswell.

Hope this helps

Thanks for this.
No I do not carry heavy loads and yes the fractures were at the top and bottom sections whereas there was no rust or diminution in diameter due to wastage. Is it possible that the shock absorbers are also shot and not doing their job as they should, thereby the springs are overworking ???? What is the best way of checking this?? Bouncing is a bit hard with a G !

Re: HELP !!! NEED NEW REAR SPINGS FOR 460 SWB 280 Ge.

I read somewhere that it was important that the springs were fitted with the tails facing in towards the diff to stop them breaking. There was  a good explanation for this but I can not remember what it is. Maybe someone can remind me.

BB, as far as I have seen, they can only go in 1 way, you have to be pretty thick to get it wrong. I aggree with Huss, Springs are a weak point, MB springs in any case. Guido will sell you ORC springs, that is all I fit.

If you change your shocks, please don't fit Monroes, Bilstein at least, but you will know if they are gone.

Re: HELP !!! NEED NEW REAR SPINGS FOR 460 SWB 280 Ge.

Thank you very much. for all this helpful advice. Having read  recently a parallel blogg in this forum titled "Springs" , I can now understand why a non specialist garage and or parts supplier are having so much trouble locating the correct part. The car is a 1987 low mileage which I have owned since 1995 and has not done any serious offroading or towing. Thus I am a bit confused as to why the spings go.

My reckoning on the springs failing, usually at the same spots is due to, that area being a stress point.  Additionally the localized stress point may be slightly thinner in profile.

I am giving you URL addresses of two suppliers; I have used the KYB springs but cannot say if they lasted over five years, only that they fitted without issue and I was satisfied with the result.  My experience of the springs were solely for road use and no comparisons were made in off roading.

Re: HELP !!! NEED NEW REAR SPINGS FOR 460 SWB 280 Ge.

Sure I posted these parts before but search for "rear spring" did not bring them up;

Springs were GKN
http://www.gknservice.de/PCP/e/pcp_pr_federtech_e.html
http://www.gknservice.com/gb/passenger_cars/download/catalogues.html
http://www.gknservice.com/fileadmin/user_upload/Brochures/English/Catalo... page 254 of 440 and have Heavy Duty versions for rear.
For SWB 300GD front GKN 49713/yellow =Cabrio/van, 49715/brown =station wagon,
Form of spring = straight, open/closed ends, maybe tapered.

For SWB rear std =476 lbs/in
http://www.oscaro.com/jeu-de-2-ressorts-de-suspension-gkn-48994-645726-1... = 286 Euro/pr
GKN Spidan 48994 type AA

MERCEDES-BENZ : 460 324 0304
MONROE : SP0460
ROC : CS0672
SUPLEX : 19091
KME 24067231 (who are part of Lesjofors and Eurocar parts supply at £64ea)
Maybe these too; maybe these are 463/van springs
SACHS 997485
TRISCAN 8750 2373
K&F 319816
KAGER 84-0527
Diamètre 1 = 13mm, 2= 15.9 mm 3 = 13 mm, outside diameter = : 175 mm, length = 489 mm
1 spring, 5.5kg, rear axle, marking stripe “Green”

For SWB rear van (and most swb 461/463) = 816 lbs/in = +71% on std
http://www.oscaro.com/jeu-de-2-ressorts-de-suspension-gkn-49418-647343-1... 254 Euro/pr
GKN Spidan 49418 (form AA) 101 Euro’s

KYB : RA5353 (£52 ea iVat ex carriage), £39.40iVeC camskills – not available in UK

Diameter 1=11.5m, 2= 18mm, 3=11.5mm, OD 170, Length 447mm, 1 spring 5.2kg, “yellow/orange”

For SWB rear heavy duty (all swb) = 952 lbs/in = +100% on std, +16% on van
http://www.oscaro.com/jeu-de-2-ressorts-de-suspension-gkn-49714-648313-1... 305 Euro/pr
GKN Spidan 49714 (type AA)
KYB : RA5354 (£52 ea iVat ex carriage)
MERCEDES-BENZ : 460 324 0504
SUPLEX : 19094
Diamètre 1 [mm] : 12,75, 2= 18,3 mm 3 = 12,7 mm, outside diameter = : 185 mm, length = 430 mm
1 spring, 6kg, rear axle, marking stripe “White”
At 1ton payload this will be 20mm taller to van and stock spring, so 60mm travel not 25mm
Std is 10mm longer than van/hdty, van and std cross at 1t payload.

I decided to go with 461/van rear springs and apart from MB could only source them from Les Jofors (local motor factor in the end). That make is normally a bit boy racer but they are actually seem to have a decent name behind them. So from the spec these are 10mm lower but with 1/2 ton in the back they are the same ride height. No idea how good they are as they have only gone to/from MOT but 460 are known for breaking rear springs so I guessed that 461 being the next generation on design wise should be better in this respect.
