Fuse maybe..?

My heater blower thingy has retired. Before I go off to my techie guy, is it likely to be something as simple as a blown fuse? It was working fine until I refurbed my central wooden console thingy and put in a new cig socket. Could be a co-incidence I guess, or it might just be dead.

It's a '91 463. Any suggestions very welcome, I don't really want to be spending spondoolies, but equally it's a pain!

Thanks.

This link seems a bit disjointed.   Am missing something, or has an item not been posted?

Can't offer W463 specific info. On a W460 it could be just the resistor, either kaputt or a bad (dislodged?) connection. If it's dead you should still get top speed. If it's disconnected the blower will not work at all.

Worth checking the fuses, what else is on the same fuse and is it working?

Also check the switch, which probably involves removing the wooden panel again.

Eddie.

After I posted Fixwin pm'd me to say that it might be fuse no 9 that had blown. I checked it, it was good, hence my post to say it wasn't the fuse.

Re: Fuse maybe..?

Hi Ian

Mines a 91 463 aswell. When heater blower packed in, I tried everything else until I had to concede motor gone. Mercedes quoted me 8 hrs labour time to dismantle dash for access to the blower motor. However, I know that fixwin38 claims record of 45 minutes with some technical wizardry, a heat gun and tiny hands to access the blower motor from the air intake...

Re: Fuse maybe..?

You could perhaps put fan on the on setting with ignition on and use a small child etc to try and move the blower if you can reach it from the air intake , though I think you would have to remove the air recirculation flap first to get access?

No joy, then try back of switch  ( means Radio Removal) then no joy must be heater motor?

A good weekends end work! Its not that bad, but a real load of Spaghetti of wires once you unplug the switch panel,

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll let my techman play with it, it's too cold to play with anything at the moment, and in any case my fingers bleed with the slightest provacation due to my psoriasis. Also, he'll do it quicker than MB's job sheet I'm sure.

Re: Fuse maybe..?

Ian,

The fan switch sends the power to the resistor pack in the air box. You can check easily with a multimeter to see whether the fan switch is at fault.

If you look at the outside of the vent box you will see a plug approx 1" x 2", pull it off and check for power between any of the connectors and ground at the different speeds
