Engine number
Hello. I am replacing the 617 engine in a 300GD for a friend, (see thread in introduction section). The new engine is slightly different in that the oil filter arrangement is different. The engine number is 617.910-12-018689. Does anyone know what vehicle this might have come from and if its suitable for a G?
thanks
james
Hi
This is an "industrial use" engine first built in the late 1960's..... not an ideal engine for a G wagon very low BHP so the G' will have little or no performanmce..it is slow with the factory fit engine ..which is model OM 617-931....................
Presumably the existing 300GD has oil filters lines etc already in place?
Gav or one of the others here will probably be along shortly and can probably tell you where that engine originated, but unless I'm missing something obvious I would think you can drop it straight in and use the existing plumbing.
OK, so Gav is probably the man for that; I can't get out to look at my truck right now, but from memory, I think you might have clearance issues with the oil filter mounted below, to say nothing of the challenge of getting the send and receive lines to the oil cooler (can be fabricated of course, but a lot of work)
Why not use the new engine's oil filter (possibly sump etc) all given that the short block is identical and so will match up with the old engine's filter and pipework anyway?
Ah, OK that's new news - is the casting different or just not tapped?
Hi
OK thats a really old engine, too old even for me to place the exact vehicle it was from.
In general it is a 3.0ltr 3005cc NA 5 cyl Diesel from a W115 series 240D 3.0 or 300D Automatic in LHD.
It develops 79hp 80ps 59kW against the standard 300GD 617.931's 87hp 88ps 65kW output.
It comes from the 1974-1976 era, christ we nearly share a birthday!!!
The Oil Filter housing does infact point down, where it needs to point up and rightly shares a different block casting.
This is not an easy get around and almost certainly there will be clearance issues.
It should be OK to convert from Auto flywheel to Manual flywheel but a few small mods may be required.
Obviously the sump would need swopping over aswell.
Inlet and Exhaust Manifolds need swopping.
The throttle linkage on top of the engine will also need attention.
Etc......etc......
For me, if you want a straight drop in, i would be looking for a G specific 617.931, they should be easy enough to find and someone on here may have one kicking about, you will spend far more in man hours trying to convert this engine than it will cost to by a correct one.
Hope this helps!!!! and you get it done
Cheers

just sent you a pm to help
It probably came from the W114, W115 1968-1976 300D. This was the introduction of this 5 cylinder engine in the sedans.
Here is the EPC for the oil filter configuration.

Hello
I seem to have caused a bit of confusion, my apologies. I know the new 617 will fit , I was just interested to know what application the 'new' engine first had which I believed can be known from the engine number. The oil filter sits below the injection pump on this 'new' engine rather than beside the injection pump on the original engine. Not having seen the vehicle (or any g-wagon) engine bay intimately before I am interested to know if anybody knew of any clearance issues this oil filter location may throw up.
Cheers
James
