Chunky General Grabber tires- difference in road performance?

Hello fellow members-

I have an old 280GE fitted with General Grabber 245/74 tires- I have already been told that, as far as fuel consumption having such chunky tires does not make much difference to fuel consumption or at least not enough to warrant the cost of new more road tires so I would just be wasting money in changing them.

However and here is the question, I am assuming that having the grabbers reduces speed and probably handling so, as I am not doing any off-roading I would value knowing if this is so and if so what tires should I consider. Any thoughts please.

Chunky tyres will increase fuel consumption, increase braking distances and give poorer roadholding. However if the roads you travel are poor, potholed and rutted or you use the vehicle off road its not worth the change.

Assuming by "chunky" you mean Mud Terrain - as posted you can expect on road poorer fuel consumption, less grip,longer braking distances and more noise. I have no idea what the margin for these differences are over All Terrains or a road biased tyre.

On the plus side off road you will enjoy better grip.

As a new set of A/t's will cost about £400 - £500 it is not cheap to change.

Hmmmmm interesting question. Having had all three shod on y G at various times, road going standard tyres are the best for any type of fuel economy. It then drops when you move to AT's and then falls even further with mud terrains.

In this instance they are on 18inch rims.

The issues I have found;

Normal Tyre's - best for on road performance and fuel economy, excellent breaking distances and an OK ride if there are not pot holes, poor road surfaces and one can do some very mild off roading (parking on the pavement, the odd unadapted road and light snow)

AT's - My personal favorite, good on road performance, slightly less fuel economy and if you decide to do some off roading, dependent on selection, rather good and can tackel most things. Very good in floods and deep (ish) snow. I have gone through: Dulers, Avon and now just loving the Coopers!!!! and will get some more (though slightly less on the actual width (current are 285) surprising low road noise.

MT-s Took em off after two days.Poor road holding, massive drop in fuel economy, looked great and was excellent off road, but not on a G500 being used almost every day. It also meant that we could not use car parks under 2.0M

Hope this helps

Thanks- very interesting- as I don't do any off-roading and lets face it not many hills in Twickenham and despite the poor road conditions (local council has no dosh), I think that it would be worth changing them. H
