Blow by on my 617 - 150K on it, valve clearances done recently.

Engine cold-ish when taken

Opinions?

Re: Blow by

Worn piston rings and consequentially cylinder walls. How is the blow back when warm? There is nothing to be overly concerned about unless there is excessive oil burning from the exhaust, bear with it or else consider budgeting for a re-manufactured engine.

If it is a case of seized rings you might be able to free these by using engine flush at oil changes or a product that does frees piston rings. I do not know of any products to recommend as I have felt these measures are a short term thing, eventually it does not replace a re-manufactured engine.

Re: Blow by

I've been having a problemw with overheating recently (coolant boiling) which has been tricky to track down in part because I think a earthing problem has caused the guage to read erratically leading me to think it was overheating when it was not and vice versa..

Truthfully, I haven't been pursuing it too hard though because this engine is about to come out anyway, but I noticed the excessive smoke this morning and thought I'd post it.

The oil is changed very regularly (annually) and generally speaking the engine has been running fine. Peter here asked whether it had had any additives added - not by me is the answer, but before who knows - curious as to why though?

Once its out I'll pull the head and see what state things are in.

Re: Blow by

To have some idea of the state of engine, before you strip down; costs allowing, it may be worth having a compression test and a cylinder leakage test before hand.  If you have access have a brake test  done, to see what your power is at the wheels. I have no idea what this might cost. But I am looking into service providers for this.

Re: Blow by

Hi Rakesh,

To be honest I'd strip it myself and would pressure test before I do.. its the time that is always a problem!

Ben

Hello Ben,

Do you have oil collecting in the air filter from the breather hose?
