Auxilary Fuel Tank,
i have seen a number of these 13 ltr extra fuel tanks for sale recently for w460
are they STD factory equipment or a after market (thing)?
has any one got or had 1 fitted to there G with or without problems
as they look like a good idea. the only thing i can think of is maybe a
bit of a MUD/RUST trap

As far as I am aware it is a Mercedes item only, the relative few numbers sold could not be justified by an after market source. Good as they are; as you have said, they are a dirt trap, this could be resolved by fitting wheel arch linning off the W463.
These; from choice could be fitted to one arch or both to allow longer range. In the latter, I think requires a different fuel tank as it needs a second filler neck to connect the second long range tank.
There is some breather piping to connect in between both, the additional tanks and main fuel tank - somewhat complicated, I have never had the patients to study the assembly of it to fully understand the system as I have not been able to work out how the second tank fills up if both are used.
There is a false sense of feeling driving with these tanks filled up, you can be traveling a long distance and noticing the fuel gauge showing Full for a long time you feel that the vehicle is returning good fuel mileage, it is only after the long range tank empty out you start seeing that needle dropping down every mile you travel.
A word of caution, slowly, with time passing by, item by item a few parts are becoming as unavailable from the dealers so should you consider fitting one, check to see if the parts are available before buying the tanks.

they really are a mud/crud rust trap, with lots of difficult connections and hoses all or any of which can choose to leak...not worth the trouble and discontinued in the w463
They are definately a trap for rot, i took mine out with the intention of repairing it but fear it is too far gone - where have you seen them for sale lately - i'd really like to replace mine - cost permitting.

Loads of different options on these over the years, but the same basic 15 litre tank in general.
Can be fitted to Right only or Left and Right (obviously handed tanks) and i guess Left only if required?
They are circa £350 - £400 from MB and in general are still available either from Germany stock or to order.
The Right hand one just replaces the long filler neck, i understand to fit a left hand one requires a different main tank as it feeds straight into this from the left, there is a lot of fiddly breather pipes etc. required to run the system but it is not overly complex.
The need to use these was to some extent removed on the 463 (and 460 with conversion) by the plastic tank which had an increased capacity (98 litre i think)

They do seem good value, even though they are original tanks that have been refurbished and coated.
Officially they can't be used once a plastic main tank is fitted. The conversion instructions specifically tell you to remove the additional tank / tanks when fitting the plastic one.
However although i have never seen or heard of one been used, i see no reason why you could not fit a right hand tank with the plastic one on a 460? You may have to do a bit of research into the breather system and which cap to use (vented or non etc.)
Certainly it would not work on a 463 obviously.
Someone on here may correct me but i cant think of a reason why it would not work on a 460?

i just removed mine yesterday to investigate rot but it's not too bad behind. the bumper brace has rotted through of course but i cant see why it couldnt be plumbed into the plastic tank as a reserve
