Re: 606 conversion
Don't think I'd want all the bodged ecu and electrics frrom the w210. I'd want to know it was going to start easy peasy with the mechanical pump. The engine will be stuck up at a daft angle you can't see from the front view. Without lowering the front of the engine there will be major oil starvation when going up steepish hills Has the turbo been bodged onto the old strangling exhaust? Has the inter cooler been missed off? Horsemeat burger. Not fillet steak Gordon

Agreed - dropping in a 606.962  and making it look tidy is one thing.  You pay your money and take your choice.. it wouldn't be good enough for me either.

Re: 606 conversion

I've just noticed where the ECU is,   next to the battery with a rats nest of wires, just ripe for having battery vapour and rainwater all over it. The air filter is working in reverse as well. No heat shielding on the turbo,

Just waiting for Mikes contribution laugh

Re: 606 conversion

all i can see is that it may well work . if this kind of thing impresses you then that's fine but it looks fairly awful and the attention to detail is just not there - make it fully mechanical ,it will always work if this goes wrong then you are really in the mire -the ignition keys cost £200 to get replaced and coded- see how you get on at your mercedes dealer when you want the thing plugged in because it keeps going into limp mode for some unknown reason, i would think you would get shown the door . the picture of the engine bay made me laugh as gordon pxw texted me to have alook at it ,who on earth would want to have a job done like that ? if you went to sell your g and opened the bonnet there is nowhere to hide the engine is not even level as the clearance against the old type (smaller brake servo) is very small this indicates to me that the engine is sitting tool low on the turbo side  and it is of course sitting very head up also ,it looks very poor and i would think may actually devalue a vehicle instead of enhancing it , shame really as it had potential but the presentation is terrible especially the awful bodged aircleaner and the untidy /badly positioned/vulnerable ecu .taking some time to nail some of those details would of been well worth it ,as it stands not a good first impression.

scrutinise the pictures properly, gordon and ben are bang on about the install and the shortcomings ,personally i would feel embarassed to show someone that as a 'product' - not to kick it too hard as it is a fair job to get it to work but it just looks like demonstration of how not to do it ,too much emphasis has been placed on keeping the ecu's etc they are the first thing to ditch- not reinstall them , the bottom  end power is not a problem with these engines and the manual pump is totally adjustable unlike the electronic pump that needs specialist  attention - making the 606 all mechanical so it can repaired in the 'field' is the way to go or you are trusting in some very flaky wiring mods that could fail and take out the ecu etc and that will cost a fortune to fix as you have to have it all setup to the key that talks to the steering lock that talks to the ecu etc etc or if it has which i believe is the case had the immobiliser 'cheated' you would only have the option of having the whole sorry affair trailered all the way to the man that did the job.

gearbox choice is a personal preference ,the 6 speed van boxes have  nice deep 1 st gear for nice control off road etc and the car 6 speeds have a slightly taller 1st - both have a really nice gearshift quality and the clutch is lighter /more positive ,the 5 speeders are good boxes also ,it just depends on what you like and budget and the tolerance for grief in fitting your shifter /gearbox mounts to suit.

whatever you do the 60x engines do make for a compelling drive and when or if you have a chance to drive one make sure you take the opportunity.
