I have a 91 463 300GD N/A. I will be swapping in a nice 87 603A from a 300D. I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me as to whether the 603N/As sump would work with the existing 603As oil pump. I know it will bolt right up to the turbo motor as the early 603As did not have a baffle. And being made for the 463 the 603N/A already has the notch in it to clear the engine mounts.

If it works the 463 603N/A would be an additional source for others wanting to do the swap. BTW my sumps number is: A 603 01 014 13

I had to change my oil pickup, and I always change the oil pump for a new one whenever I am there. The risk is not worth the money.

I am mainly curious about the depth of the pan and if the 603A pump's pick-up reach the proper depth to work with that sump.
or could I use the 603N/A pump along with the sump attached to the 603A motor? Would this pump put out the correct oil pressure and amount of oil.

I've got a OM603 N/A pump with G pickup and sump on my super performance turbo OM606. If it works for this engine, it will work for yours. Mine does at least 1000-1200 rmp more than yours will, and when I just did it I drove it really hards with no problems.

Please follow my advice about fitting a new pump though, I've had a pump failure before, and it is just not worth it.

 Hi Mark

This is a definite answer-yes the sump will fit perfectly.
You will have to change the pump to get the correct pick up length.
The Merc pumps vary only in the length of the pump gears, and pickup dimensions, gear size varies the output flow. The gear length is cast into the housing, (see picture, this is off a 602, 25mm). The 603 uses a 30mm gear. Your 603na probably has a 30mm pump, which should be  good for the turbo, (but when you remove the sump from the 603 turbo, you'll see the size on the pump housing),  and you could probably unbolt the pickup off the pump housings and swap them if you really wanted to, should the 603a pump be bigger, (sometimes, the castings are slightly different not allowing this), I've done it, BUT, as mentioned above, I would not recommend that, just put a whole new pump on it. (the 603 3.5litre turbo uses a bigger pump, 35mm I think, but as mentioned above, the 30mm should do the job just fine.) The part number is (30mm) 6031801101, and for the bigger (35mm I think), 6031802501.
Hope this helps! The short answer- take the sump off both engines, look at the gear size, go from there. The sump is exactly what you need.

Cheers Scott

Fantastic, thanks for the info guys. Since my 603N/A has 206K miles on it I think to keep everything healthy I will purchase a new pump. I already have the new water pump with larger impeller and smaller pully ready to go as well.

Thanks again

Swap coming along. Work keeps getting in the way. New water pump and sump pump are in.
I fabricated the 300GD 603N/A air filter to resemble/function like the 350GD air filter, as my fender air intake is on the same side as the injection pump. I found the massive 350GD crossover pipe and started working on the fitment. Basically the N/A and the A are the same with the exception the 603N/A has 6 holes and the 603A has one larger hole toward the back. My frakenfilter fits just like factory.
