300GD Starting Problems
Hi everyone,
I have been having starting problems with my 300GD.
yesterday morning I jumped into the car and she started first time, I drove about 25 miles and when manoeuvring into a space she stalled and then refused to start again. No attempt to turn over, just a click.
I left it for the rest of the day whilst I was in my office, came back out and she just clicked a few times, then turned over enthusiastically and started first time, drove about 10 miles and stopped at a shop, came back out - nothing just a click.
left it overnight and went back this morning, burst into life at first turn of the key, drove 20 miles home and she won't start again, just the click.
has anyone any suggestions as to the cause of this?
I thought about starter but why would temeperature appear to cause a problem?
I should say that for the last while, there have been times when she seemed to wait a second or two before starter begins to turn.
I hope that someone out there has some suggestions.
Cheers
Colin
Sounds most probably like the starter solenoid, needs cleaning/lubricating.
Next time it happens, try holding the key to start while someone else gives the solenoid a tap, if it engages, then you'll know.
It does sound like your starter motor
Hi, yes that'll be the solenoid. If it's a definite click, the the solenoid itself is working, just the contacts not making good. Yes it's part of the starter, is mounted on the side of it.
Hi Colin
from your posts it would appear that the starter is getting tired and needs to be removed and serviced... sticking solenoid ( attached to starter) and dirty contacts inside the starter are common problems ..a weak battery which has already had a big jolt from the heater plugs may also cause similar problems as will a corroded / loose terminal clamp on the battery ......
Hi Colin
not too bad to remove ( from underneath ) you can actually see the solenoid on top of the starter body from the drivers side wheel arch and with the right sockets bar etc iti s a wiggle past the exhoust down pipe to actually get on the floor
Hi Colin,
This is probably six months too late, however I had the same problem.
After getting the starter and solanoid reconditioned the problem persisted.
Installed a heat sheild..........still had the problem.
Then I noticed the battery to starter cable was showing quite a bit of
oxidation........so I clipped the ends thinking the oxidation would be confined
to those areas exposed to the elements.........alas this was not so...........
the cable was terribly oxidised all the way through........
This obviously causes an issue once there is a bit of heat in the cable and
probably more importantly it presents itself as a fire hazard !!!!!
So I replaced the cable all seems to be ok now.

Thanks gents,
I just went out to it again and she started and stopped several times with no problem!
When she doesnt turn over I can hear clicking from nearside bulkhead area, is that the solenoid or is it attached to the starter?
