worse when engine hot. starts of push.. not the starter... she seems to get tight after turning over a few times... possibly caused by worn chain... anyone experience this?

Ned.

I have not experienced this so can't confirm that the timing chain is your problem. I have an OM617 chain and tensioner, brand new, boxed. But that will probably not fit your 2.0 engine. Maybe Gav Helme can confirm. Also try www.micksgarage .com for good prices.

Could this be a different problem? Fly-wheel??

Eddie.

Hi Ned

190D 2.0 OM601.911 Engine

Timing Chain A003 997 55 94 £156 + vat

Tensioner A601 050 07 11 £101 + vat

300GD 3.0 OM617.931 Engine

Timing Chain A003 997 62 94

Tensioner A615 050 08 11

So no they wont swap over Eddie... unfortunatly...

OM60X in the late 80's onwards did have chain stretch issues but most will have been sorted in the day and it was a bad batch of chains that caused it, from memory up to 10deg out was rectified with a chain, over 10deg had a new engine!

OM60X also suffer with Vacuum Pump failure and more importantly the Timing Device (Gear) that sits behind the Vacuum Pump and drives it, which in turn is connected to the Fuel Injection Pump, These gears failed for fun in the day...

Timing Gear A601 070 26 45 £404 + vat, don't forget i think the Bolt that secures this to the Pump is LH Thread!!!

Hope you get it sorted NED, sounds like you are heading for another used 190D engine as a more economic alternative if either of those is the culprit!!!

Does not sit right by me - a loose chain will remain loose; The fact you say the chain tightens up after a few turns seems to me chain tensioner problem and, or low engine oil level. Check and replenish engine as necessary and take form there.

If the chain has extended, this can be checked for and if so, do have it and chain slides renewed. In some case worn cogs may need replacement. In consideration of a chain replacement job, factor in engine mileage, oil pressure reading when the engine idles 'Hot', compression pressures and an experienced technician using gases analysis off a four gas meter can tell you the state of valve seating.

If the engine needs work; you would be  better off reconditioning your engine or replacing with a good second hand one.
