Re: A Word of Warning

I had a long conversation today with another fixwin38 victim from the western highlands. He fell for the blarney and parted with serious cash. He's been left with a bit of a dog.  He is a member but doesn't want to make his plight public and risk any recriminations. I have to respect his wishes but I just wanted to make it known there's  another one.

Any idea what level of money ? And when? It seems that somewhere around 8 to 10 grand is the sweet spot or average take from each 'CLIENT' over the years of gwoa membership let's say 10 years ??? 50 k a year /40 k?? It is very possible that it could be hundreds of thousands of pounds- it is only half a dozen jobs a year -every year and then add in vehicle sales to members who come on the forum looking for their first g wagen, they get pm'd and then they get sold a lemon or get terrible quality work done on their vehicle. sadly there seems to be a theme of only innocents who have little mechanical knowledge being hit the hardest. - think about it.. It has been that way for years and nothing was done. I wonder how many suffer in silence???

Many thanks for posting Gordon, the sad fact is there are quite a few, some of which have since left the club/forum due to having such a bad experience, which I find is such a shame. I think it has been very noble of those who have posted and shared their experiences and I also respect those who have decided to keep their council, especially after hearing their stories first hand.

The great news is that as a club/forum we appear to be addressing these issues and helping both past, present and potentially future members/owners to not get blighted by such people, which adds to the strength of the GWOA, I believe.

Keep 'em coming!

Hi Suzie,

I have had some dealings with fixwin as well, .....he sold me the personal G-Wagon of another locally renowned Independent G-Wagon expert, that had been completely restored for himself to an extremely high standard, (“all the work had been done”) for only £5500,....

Unfortunately, I had lots of problems ....

.....The person they had commissioned to respray the G-Wagon before I got it had made a mess of it and all the rust appeared again after just a few weeks..... The new clutch that fixwin informed me had been fitted to it just before I bought it, failed. The new wiper spindles that had been fitted to it must also have been faulty (to list but a few examples of my bad luck)

..... As we all know G-Wagon parts increase in price the older and more ‘run in’ they get. That’s why the price of parts sourced from fixwins scrap G-Wagons are generally more expensive than the new parts I can now get with the help of GAV and other members of the club...

...... eventually stopped using this outfit when I was charged £580 to supply and fit a second hand clutch after the new clutch fitted to the vehicle before I bought it broke.

As I say, my issues were just bad luck, ...

Regards,

Colm

I read this with interest and a few questions came to mind. Perhaps it was 'only £5,500' because pattern-parts were used?

I guess if an OEM clutch had been fitted it would be extremely unlikely to fail so soon?

Also, most garages or mechanics will  have a re-sprayer whom they know well and use often and can vouch for the work. Did they request a cheap 'n cheerful job just to sell  the vehicle?

Also I never heard of old, worn  and used ('run-in') parts being more valuable than new parts. Seems like a handy excuse to make use of the breaker's yard parts and add a mark-up.

caveat emptor.

Re: A Word of Warning

Is the seller saying that you have to transfer the money two days before you can collect the vehicle ??

It does not fill me with confidence when a seller rants on about the terms of payment rather than talking about the merits of his vehicle. He also seems to be saying that five potential buyers have walked away from it, but then that might be down to his attitude rather than the condition of his G smiley.

I go for adverts like this,  most people get put off by the attitude, means less bids and a potential bargain, just ignore the anger, he'll probably be fine in person, some people are tw*** behind a keyboard.

Re: A Word of Warning

To: Chairman and all members

I am sorry to see it has come to this but I need to get a situation resolved and I feel posting here may be one of my last options. It may or may not also benefit members in the future. I have accepted today that I am now in dispute with a member who also is a committee member of the GWOA, Gordon from G Restorations, over work that was carried out on my 460.

My question to you is if there is a dispute resolution process in place in the association? I am still of the opinion that all issues can be fixed very easily and we can all move on. I am an exceptionally reasonable person and just want the job finished. Please advise?

I would like to publish our email thread to explain the situation but I am asking permission first. I should probably get this checked legally first as I certainly do not want to do anything wrong to make the situation worse. So please let me know if this is ok?

I got to a stage where I was awaiting one week with no response to my emails so today I posted a very gentle reminder on a thread here today and I received a response on another forum, gwagenregister.

To sum up my goal is to get my fantastic G on the road and I would really appreciate any help you can offer to resolve this. Looking back over this thread it is probably one of the reasons I went with Gordon as he seemed to have a great customer focused attitude based on his posts here.

Re: A Word of Warning

I need to bump this post up as due to an awful lot of activity this morning my post above is no longer on the recent post section. This is important to all members and should not get buried.  Can you someone please advise how the GWOA can help a member in my situation? The GWOA was my first port of call when I started my project. I understand that the GWOA does not endorse any trader however when things go wrong there needs to be some kind of support? I am a customer of a person who also happens to be a GWOA committee member, was paid money for an agreed service and in my view I have not got the service I paid for and have suffered a loss. As mentioned I am quite happy to publish the email thread to give a very open account of what happened but I do need a response from the GWOA first. What is really annoying is that my emails had been ignored for a week until I posted on the GWOA yesterday. My post was not replied to on the GWOA but on another site and I still have no response to my emails! Any help that any member could offer to resolve this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Gavin

I see you (Gordon) have gone to the trouble of copying and pasting the response you put on the other website? That is the second time you have brought up names and threats. Could you please verify you are saying these were from me? If so please publish, if not please retract and offer an apology. All I want is what I paid for, the agreed job, your expertise and the very positive customer attitude as you posted earlier in this thread. Thanks.

As a matter of interest and excuse my ignorance on this matter, but on the basis of so many complaints about this rogue member, should it not be for the moderator of this  site to take steps and stop him from contributing his  "luring  to his lair" messages to un suspecting bona fide members??

Re: A Word of Warning

Not getting into any specfics about this dispute and just replying to previous posts...

I agree with Gordon here. There is no connection whatsoever with Fixwin and that was not my intent. I posted this here for the following reasons: the topic is similar and I think it is a good idea to keep all these in this very important sticky thread. Let people see the good and bad and then make an informed decision. I wanted to stress the importance of this and make the site admins aware of the situation. The main reason I posted it here however is because of Gordon's very customer focused comments in this thread regarding the Fixwin situation. If you read over the first post you will see I touch on this towards the end of the post. This thread was one of the reasons I was happy to give Gordon the job. I was never approached by Gordon in anyway touting for work. I approached Gordon. I was however approached by Fixwin!!

I now ask for a third time (without reply) about these claims of name calling and threats. Gordon will you please clarify if this referred to me or Dentcentre and then back up the claims or retract them? You did this on two different website and so please deal with both.

Just something quick I can't pass based on a previous comment.

This is not my audiance as quoted. This is our membership of the GWOA and these members are entitled to know all that is good and bad. This is not a rant or seeking attention. This is about exchanging hard earned money for a service.  All should be open in a club. Long live the GWOA and free speech.

Re: A Word of Warning

Hello,

I am not a member here, but have been using this site for a number of years. I understand that you have a dispute over work carried out by G-restorations, and want to see if the club here can help resolve the matter for you on the basis that Gordon is a committee member here. As far as  can tell - and I may be wrong here- G-restorations is a business entity that has only incidental connections to this club through its owner.

I think all we know at the moment is that G-restorations fitted an engine that, allegedly, you provided and now you want redress over the claimed subsequent failure of that engine.

I think it will be difficult for anyone on here to resolve this for you or even pass opinion since:

  • we have no details of the contract entered into
  • what guarantees, if any, were provided (by G-restorations or by engine supplier) ?
  • what is the exact nature of the alleged engine failure ?
  • where the engine was sourced from ?
  • what evidence there is that it was a fully working engine? Inspection report ?
  • why you think G-restorations is responsible for the alleged engine failure ?

I think this is way you may not have had much response from this forum.

Hi Arnie, If you go back to my first post you will see I requested permission from the GWOA to publish the email thread. I have not received a response yet and that is why your haven't seen any details. This is the last chance saloon for me, so I felt it was best to ask permission.

Gavin. Don't waste your time and energy posting on here about disputes. Been there done that. It will make squat difference in the end.

You will be goaded by a couple of half wits here who just want to stoke you up into a message ping pong competition.

There are a handful of genuine enthusiasts who can help you. But then you know who they are already.

Alan, if it's not too far for you (Northampton) I can recommend a totally honest/knowledgeable/skilled MB trained "top diagnostic technician" (for that is apparently how they are labeled) who has been looking after all my MB's (G SL's ML's CLK SLK SE) for ten years. A great guy who also runs a 460.

That's why buyers look for MB service history - to buy from someone who DID spend money to maintain the car properly, even if they don't intend to! !  Painful though, as well as 460 my family owns an 11yr old SLK with full MB service history and the dealer has just quoted £2k to fix a small leak from the steering box. Only 'authorised' repair is to replace the box but we all know they can be resealed / rebuilt for about 1/10th of that. Meanwhile a can of fluid is substantially cheaper!!

I've always kept cars I bought new within the dealership network for the first few years. However, with older cars, and here I'm thinking of my SL's and G, I wouldn't consider taking them to a main dealer. How many 129's/463's do you think my local dealer has seen in the last 5 years? At one dealership a guy didn't even know an SL60 had been made!!

I'd say that my tech-guy sees more older MB's in month than the local MB dealer sees in a decade.

It's about Service History, not MB Service History imho. Horses for course.

Re: A Word of Warning

I've got agree with Ian, Mercedes specialists seem much more familiar with older cars problems than the dealers who mainly deal with plug in diagnostics systems in newer vehicles.

I also think it is  the case that a specialist is much more likely to be willing to try and fix a part rather than adopting the more expensive  replace it  mentality of the main dealer.
