Wiper woes
Morning G gurus,
I'm having some issues with my wipers, i think there are multiple things going on casued by ignoring an issue for a while, however I was forced to investigate this week when they stubbonly refused to move at all.
Speaking with my local MB dealer who are normally enthusiastic and useful with the G they are struggling this time, with a new motor availible from Germany at ~£450+VAT and relays and brush kits no longer availible i'm a little stuck.
Onto the problems...
I disassembled the motor last night and found one of the brushes is loose on the board and damaged/not moving freely. I fettled it and it now sort of works, but not sure for how long. So ideally i need a brush kit. MB part no for the kit is A 000 829 07 75, and not availible from them, i thought i could find it easy as a standard part but apparently not - any suggestions for this kit?
Reconnecting the motor it now spins with more vigour than it ever has before, so thats a win. However, i think there is an issue with the relay, (more of a mechanical mind, electrics are magic). It only works on full speed, and stops as soon as you turn the switch rtaher than finishing its cycle. Again, the relay (MB no A 005 545 13 24) is not available. Any suggestions for a suitable alternative? or if that is even the issue?
Finally, if it is the relay, where is it located in the car, i've checked the places i would expect but cant see it.
Any help very much appreciated.
Regards
Hagar
I think buy used replacement for both motor and relay. Try the usual suspects. I think the motor is in the engine bay, so very easy access? Better than fiddling with brush replacement which never seems to work (although you seem to have fixed that part).
Wiper motor can't be unique to the G, part number? Try autodoc? Ebay.de etc. Can you swap relay for another from the car?
Isn't there someone with the same model G nearish to Milton Keynes? Worth swapping out the relay for one you know to be good just to make sure that yours is faulty before going to all the hassle of sourcing a replacement.
Hopefully Gavin (the G parts guru) will be along shortly with all the answers.
You should be looking at the wiper spindles, they normally seize up and strain the wiper motor, this is your first port of call.
I have changed or serviced quite a few over the years.
The cheapest spindle kit is from Austria and can be bought individually.
If you buy from mbuk the come complete with linkages but is more expensive
Motors rarely fail and usually only burnt brushes caused as Graham says by seized spindles
If you have your motor disconnected mechanically from the linkage can you move the wiper arms by hand.. if so ok.. if not spindles are siezed
assuming motor is ok there are 2 identical relays for front and rear wiper
again assuming rear is functioning correctly you can swap over and see if your fault changes
The 460 relay was A0055450524 changed to the A0055451324 as dealer says
This in turn changes to the 463 type A0055456424 and then to a new number A000 982 07 23
Germany have stock about £55 plus vat
I am sure I have a used one at home if your stuck
To locate drop down the fuse board by removing the two screws into the dash and push forward and swing down gentle on its two hooks
The relays are all behind... wiper relay for front is in there and the rear is usually to the side on the inside of the A pillar.. black box 2"x2"x1" usually with a tab either side with two screws to mount although not always screwed in
Mainly is a Bosch unit 0 335 320 015 from memory with WISCHINTERVALRELAIS or some such on it.. 6 spade terminal although I think some have space for 8
Also check the big earth point you under that dash area and clean and replace
Easy to see all the brown wires heading to one bolt!
Column Stalk also do fail... Contacts wear and a particular wire always breaks off
BEFORE YOU DO ANY OF THAT!
Check all fuses and check again...
Make sure you take each one out in turn and gentle nip together the two sprung prongs they sit in... over time they spread and don't grip the fuse properly
On the high draw circuits this usually manifests itself in a false earth out thru another circuit or to ground...
This is worth doing on every 460 once every year or so
It's amazing what it cures!!!
463 will work
Happy to send you the used one to try and if all OK will be £20
I'll have a look and see if I have a spare motor ..good or not to rob a brush from
I have heard of this once before and sold the guy a 24v motor to repair his with.. think it had also cracked the housing too
PM me with phone number and address if you want me to post the used relay
I don't know if it works and my 460 is at the paint shop so can't test it!
forgot the all important info...
