The swivels are taper roller bearings top and bottom, the top ones run dry of grease and eat themselves, or they may just need to be adjusted.
You have to disconnect everything off the hub, brakes, wires and steering joints. you then remove 4 bolts top and bottom and remove the swivel mounts. The hub will come off as a whole so you can see what's worn.... after you've cleaned of half a ton of grease and crap
Not a pleasant job!

The attached should help.
It could be the king pin bearings or the wheel bearings, once you strip it expect to find all sorts of nasties.
To check if the problem is a wheel bearing or swivel pins, Jack up the truck and get somebody to put the foot on the break. If there is movement it is likely to be swivel pins as by applying the brake your not allowing any movement in the wheel bearings. As Gordon said rebuilding the swivel housing is probably the worst job on a G ,not for its complexity but because of the mess. Even if the pins appear in good shape I would suggest you give then a service anyway at some time.
Note the chrome ball and swivel housing are matched pairs and can't be changed. If the swivel housing or chrome is damaged they should be changed as pairs (as stated in the Merc workshop manual). If you don't you will find the UJ on the drive shaft will run out of true and will eventually damage the bearing.
thanks for that gordon,so it may not be inner ,outer wheel bearings on shaft?but top an bottom bearings?
