i seem to have two brake fluid reservoirs in my 1987 300gd non turbo.

The one on drivers side is full and fine .the one ear battery is empty with no hose what's this for.

I think that is your diff lock fluid, there should be a small pipe around 15 mm coming out if the bottom of it, it might have come loose or perished around the join, do your diff locks work?

The reservoir near the battery is for your front and rear diff locking cylinders.

There should be a hose going directly down to the near side of the chassis frame where it should connect to an "F" shaped join.

The join feeds the front and rear diff lock cylinders. Normal DOT 4, mineral brake fluid is used in this system.

Lol! You might be in luck but you will have to find the pipe first, if you do and it doesn't leak and you can connect it, it just pushes on with a clip to hold it in position, fill it up and bleed the locks, you never know!!!

You might want to make sure the pipe is clear before you fill the reservoir up!!

Re: W460 brake fluid reservoirs

Went to my local old school mechanic.at 5pm on ramp found pipes rotted.all replaced and purged dot4 fluid through to 15 minutes.front and rear diff fully working now.found both indicator cables cut by exhaust fitter they'll be done tomorrow.

£40 two hours labour and pipe and fluid.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR ADVICE

my mechanic hates all cars and for the first time ever commented how clever the diff lock systems are especially for it's age.
