Hi all.. Iv Starting to sort out a " slight " update of mainly a full respray and couple of updated bits. does anyone know what is the best way to refurb the side boby trims, wing wxtenshion and head light shrouds, the g's i'v seen around are like a gloss finish to them but i not sure if this is just due to being a newer model Also would be intrested in a set of leather seat ( 5 door ) as these seem to be easier to keep clean.

Many thanks Geoff..

Re: Trims

Hello,

Since you mention the bits around the headlamps, I am guessing you have a W460, with the dark rubber headlight surrounds, and wing extension that wrap around the lower part of the front wings, under the headlamps.

The rubber surface, including the strips along the body, tends to oxidize over time, You can bring it to a shine, by rubbing-down with 800 - 1200 grit wet and dry, then polishing with T-Cut and finally a wax polish. Remove the head light surrounds to do this and place some strips of protective masking tape alongside the body trims to protect the bodywork.

As for the mud-guard extensions, there were two types:: early ones were glass-fibre, which were painted, Later one were PU plastic. and you may be able to do something with T-Cut and polish.

If you have a W463, then the head light surrounds are plastic and these are usually painted in body colour, as are the wing mudguard extensions.

Re-trimming seats and interior panels  in good leather will probably cost around £3,500.

Re: Trims

Another option I used on all the rubber trim - i.e. The side strips and headlight surrounds on my 460 was after rubbing them down - I took it all off and replaced all the screws with stainless ones, and used a mid then fine grade nylon sanding pad - was painting them with rubber dye. NOTE this is NOT the same as plastic paint. It is a specific dye that works its way into the trim surface. I got mine from Halfords. Doing several light coats brought them back to new, though when I had all the bodywork done I did invest in new headlight surrounds. Best Simon.
