Changing wheels is a real pain.

I'm sure that someone must produce a "wheel locating pin" if that's what it might be called. I'm sure I used to have one with an earlier MB that I owned but my G doesn't have one in the tool kit.

It's like a long post with a thread on one end. When the wheel is off you screw this "post" into the topmost hole in the hub and that allows you to easily "hang" the wheel in place, line up the other holes and bolt the wheel on without doing in your back.

Hopefully someone will recognise what I'm talking about from my clumsy description above and know (a) what the proper name is for what I'm looking for and (b) know where I can get one.

Yes - got one really useful, is an MB part and  cheap. As for description and part number no idea!

Will have a look but hopefully someone will have the info to hand.

Re: These wheels are really heavy

Thanks panzer.

Just phoned my local MB spares dept - unusually hopeless. After consulting "with my colleage" he says they don't have such an item for a G Wagon and "it's probably because the wheels are bigger so the bolts are different".

Sometimes you do wonder if it's all worth it.

Awaiting someone sensible on here to give me the answer.

Doh!

They seem to come in different sizes - is M14 x 1.5 the one I want?

The G-bolts are exactly the same as for a W220 S-Class. M14 x 1.5 threads. you probably can easily find something suitable:
