hi i was wondering cud ne1 help me i got a 300gd last nov and its been running pretty well since except for a few minor things ive dealt with my self but recently it has started to stick in gear usually at the most inopertune times ,theres quite a lot of play in the gearstick does anyone know what this is? how do i fix it??

It might just be worn bushes of the linkage from the gearstick to the gearbox. To check this you'll have to get underneath the car and check for wear. They are easy to replace and cost virtually nothing.

You can also lift the gearlever gaiter and give the mechanism a good old soak in spray grease of the kind used for motorbike transmission chains.

If neither works then it's more serious 'cause it will be internal but I bet that it will greatly improve if you try the above.

Hi, I had the same problem when I first got the "bucket" especially if going quickly ( or trying to ) from 1st/2nd to reverse. Had to get under and physically pull the linkage. It is a simple fix as the linkage rods are adjustable. All you need to do is take up the slack in each rod ( three if I remember correctly ). Never had any problems with it since. :)

I have just started having this problem too. when I took the gaiter off the is a casing with 4 small nuts do i need to remove this to grease it all.. Can I access the selectors from under the vehicle comfortably or are they awkward. Just wanted to assess time to do it nothing worse than a 10min job turning into 4hrs if you wasnt prepared for it..

The bushes are easily accessible from underneath. I suggest that you see it for yourself in order to better plan the repair.

They are accessible, but I wouldnt say easily. If only I could teach my 9 year old to remove and refit the springs.

Had the embarrassment of getting stuck in 1st on Friday at the local MB dealer and it just wouldnt budge. MB Epsom were very helpful and crawled underneath to see if they could free it. The guy failed, although he was only about 25 so probably never seen the underside of a G before. Anyway, had it towed back home and once on teh ramp, I was able to deselect 1st gear very easily. Have replaced one of the large bushes at the gearbox end which was showing minor signs of wear. Also replaced one of the 3 smaller bushes at the gear lever end but it was such a pig to remove refit the clips and didnt really look in that bad condition that I havent attempted the other 2.

This "problem" can be caused in two ways:

1)Selector arm bushes worn to the point where the arms will actually bind in the levers.
but it is more likely to be:
The gear selector assembly where the gear lever actually goes into becoming dry/dirty/corroded/stuck/broken springs... That's the part sitting on top of the gearbox held by four nuts...
There's a repair kit available from Merc to sort this out for good. It is a whole bag full of the greatest variety of small parts - all mannner of little springs, clips, washers, etc. It is very cheap, but if you haven't got a manual, make sure they give you the printout showing all the parts and how they fit together. You'd also need a strong vice(150mm) and a variety of strong ciriclip pliers. With the right tools, it can be done in less than an hour. This together with changing all the other little bushes on the arms will make the shift feel like that of a new gearbox!!!!

Do you have a part number for it or description as my Merc garage may have difficulty in finding it?

Any idea what is the correct lenght of the 3 Linkage rods that run from the gearbox to the gear lever since I took mine off to clean and replace bushes.
Having scanned through on the manual without luck.

OK NOt being too technical.... On the way back home today I had problems moving back from 4th to the 'D' - as if somthing was jamming it. This prevented me putting it into D and then on to N,R and P.

Once I have 'jiggled and wiggled' it a bit, it then mved across to the D and then up to N etc. Trying the other way it goes into D ok, but will not now move into 4.

Any advice?
