Hello members I wondered if anyone could give me advice on a period radio for my c reg 300 gd. it currently has a Philips radio tape in (with a dictaphone mic attached) which is quite funny but doesn't look like it would have come out the factory like this. What make and model radio would it have been please ? It's a uk rhd vehicle.

In 1985 only the Becker Avus (tape, mono) or the Becker Europa (in different versions) could be ordered. From 1987 the more expensive Becker Grand Prix and the top of the line Becker Mexico would have been available.

and you have to look for the "eletronic Kurier" versions, sound will be disappointing. But I have seen modern versions in the Becker Retro look, these should be more satisfying.

My 1987 230GE had a Blaupunkt Paris in it from 1991 when I got it.

It was a flip front, keycard secured, radio-tape.  I think it must have been after market, but I liked it.  I still have it, but its not working.

I want it to be authentic

Thanks for all your feedback. I did notice they were Becker on photo research but discounted them as foreign stereos that wouldn't have been in cars in the uk.

so they weren't Blaupunkt then ?

Hi,

My '87 300 gd had a Blaupunkt Oxford M26(radio cassette) fitted from new. I still have it and was still working when I removed!

Ticks the retro and genuine boxes! Have attached picture - apologies not clean but is in as removed condition 10 years ago! Please shout if interested, I've no plans for it and happy to donate within the G-community.

Cheers,

Stewart

Yes, a downside... but,

I have found using a Bluetooth FM transmitter (just plug into cigarette lighter socket, availble for less than £20) works well, plus have USB charging, hands-free calls, DAB etc, so effectively all phone compatible! Lot cheaper than upgrading stereo's etc! And they come in lots of flashing disco-light versions. Bonus :)

Admins can/have to.  Occasionally its not possible.  The problem is that when you hit submit/post there is no visible sign it is doing anything and it takes a while.  In the case of new posts, it takes a good 1 minute!  Just a feature of this legacy website which we maintain for the years of history it has.

My, that's a posh 460! Walnut trim etc... Good old grey plastic in mine, proper working vehicle. So, is Blaupunkt cheap brother of Becker?

Becker radios were expensive (Becker Mexiko ~£400 in 1987), people probably did not order radios from the factory and had Blaupunkt radios fitted by the dealer in the UK.

I would love the radio if it's still available. It's a very kind offer. Let me know next steps please? Thank you again

That would be nice to put a working original back in.

When I couldn't get my Blaupunkt tape drive working any more in my 1987, and I wanted Bluetooth sound to the speakers, I decided to buy a cheap mini-unit (single DIN fitting but half depth) which looks OK and is so cheap that noone will break in to steal it.  Just #18 GBP

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254993589841

Being chinese made, it boasts more than it delivers in features, but the Bluetooth/MP3 works, the sound is fine, and it provides a USB charge port.  You can change the lighting colour (green, blue, red, cyan, orange, white (as picture) etc to match your G dash.   The 'graphic equalizer' in the picture is just a static picture and not active! and the microphone for handsfree was a total POS.  But it went in in 30 minutes - needs a permanent 12V and a switched one and the speaker wires and that's about it.

You may be able to get more retro looking ones.

Re: Stereo system in a 1986 w460 g wagon convertible

Very few Mercedes cars had a radio factory fitted until well into the 90's and the G was no exception

As above only factory option was the Becker units and expensive and rare in G's especially U.K. spec

The radios were dealer fitted in period along with most aerials and predominantly were Blaupunkt "Blue Spot" models all named after worldwide cities

It depended on customer request etc what was actually installed

Ive worked in the U.K. MB dealer network since 1987 so can vouch for what happened back in the day!

Still cringe at the trainees back then fitting an aerial into a £50k S Class rear wing with a step drill... scarred for life at some of the end results I saw!!
