I am thinking of getting a G in "red" , but want to respray to black or blue. Does anyone know roughly how much this would set me back and any good resprayers in london area. I understand the real expense is in spraying the interior bits.

Why not buy the right colour in the first place?

Why not buy the right colour in the first place? If you're buying a 460 280 GE (for example) a professional respray is going to cost you almost as much as the car itself so why bother?

There seems to be shortage of good quality G's in the colours I want. I was hoping to buy a silver one advertised on this site. But one RAC check and many faults later decided against this. I'm looking for a 463, SWB, preferably petrol in Blue, Black or silver. In reality it will never be used off road, as in the past I have owned a Cherokee, Discovery and now a Discovery Series 2, none of which ventured beyond the grassy verge of the pavement.

I've been looking for nearly 3 months and still had no joy. There's currently a red one on autotrader for £12k with 63k miles. This seems reasonable to me and hopefully allowing for a respray will still bring it in under the £18-£20k that G-Wagon.co.uk would ask for such a vehicle.

What do you think

Well, spraying a 463 always makes more sense for two reasons. First is the higher value of the vehicle, which makes the cost of spraying it be lower in relative terms to that of a 460. Second is that the 463, as opposed to the 460 has no exposed metalwork in the inside of the car so that there's no need of spraying the inside which reduces the cost enormously.

I also understand that given the limited numbers of 463s units that turn up for sale, least in SWB and in the right condition, it's hard to find the colour that one wants. But having a number of years of experience running G-Wagens, my opinion is that they are expensive vehicles to put in tip-top condition (don't forget that we're talking about cars which in the best case are 10 years old) so I would save my money for this and live with the less loved colour.

Thanks for the tip, I didn't realise the 463 had no exposed interior metal. That makes my decision easier. I actually didn't go to see the car because it was being sold on behalf of a customer who lives in Gt Yarmouth. Had a good conversation with the guy at the garage (C&V cars) who is a member of this forum(Colin Lamb) and gave me some good feedback on the car. He also mentioned the car was advertised in GWizz. Out of interest how do I subscribe to GWizz?

GWizz is the newsletter of the GWOA. The only way to subscribe to it is becoming a fully paid member of the GWOA and that will cost you the princely sum of £ 25 per annum. I guess that when you will buy yourself your G you will run out of excuses for not becoming a member....
