Rear wheel bearing

Today I noticed some fluid dripping from the one of the rear drums on my 1987 W460 300GD. Hoping it was brake fluid (for an easy fix), it was in actual fact, gear oil.

I have researched on this site, and found that it doesn't sound like too bad of a job, but does anybody have the relevant section of the WSM they can send over, so I can have a proper look before I get stuck in?

I have the older workshop manual, but it's for the early type of axle with the shrink fit retaining ring, and from the sounds of it, I have the slightly later type of bearing with the retaining nut.

Cheers,

Ben.

Re: Rear wheel bearing

I had this recently (1987 230GE) and could have just replaced the seal, but went for a complete bearing. it was easier (garage did it).

Re: Rear wheel bearing

Was it the gasket or the axle shaft seal leaking?

I understand that the gasket could be replaced easily, but wouldn't doing the seal require pulling the bearing off? If i'm going that far, I may as well press a new bearing back on.
