Re: Rear Brake Shoes and NSF Wheel bearing

Oh - and meant to add the garage (who I do trust) have said that according to whatever it is work manual garages use for costs etc reckons NSF wheel bearing is a 6.5 hour job. Is this the case? What makes it so tricky, or should I be doing it myself!!!

Sounds steep in both cases.  Brake pads/shoes in particular should be less but I do recall buying some on exchange basis to get them cheaper, and I wouldn't have done that if they were cheap.

But its not work I do myself.  Especially wheel bearing work.

Try Autodoc.co.uk

(German supplier with a multitude of identical websites under different names. Delivery will be 3-5 days)

Re: Rear Brake Shoes and NSF Wheel bearing

Thanks - have ordered, hopefully just 3 days!

Anybody any idea how long changing NSF wheel bearing should take - is it likely to be a 6+ hours job?

Cheers

Rear brake shoes can be relined - an economic option.

Yes, don't throw away the old ones. In fact many that are sold as new are actually refurbished and re-lined parts, as you can tell by the rust-pitted metal (cleaned sand-blasted and re-painted that it may be). problem is finding a local company that will re-line the shoes.

I think the parts are sorted.

OP is wondering about the workshop time to do the NSF wheelbearing.   6.5hrs?  Seems like that is what the workshop guide is saying.

Re: Rear Brake Shoes and NSF Wheel bearing

Wheel Bearings time is 5.5 hrs each side. Given the labour intensive job, the wheel bearings is not the only thing you will require - there is more to the list.

Generally speaking the wheel bearings are a dealer item but these can be sourced through bearing suppliers for which you need to provide number off the old bearings.

If your CV joint does not require replacement then very likely the CV boot will as they do perish with grease filled boot additional to what is filled in the hub.

If one sides wheel bearing is worn then it is likely the other side's has too. DO NOT readjust any free play in the wheel bearing as this simply loads the bearing more setting up for a quicker failure. If there is free play it is time for a  new set of wheel bearings.

The only special tool you will need is the castled socket for the W460.  W463 socket and bearings are different

For the rear brake shoes try https://www.brakesint.co.uk/ or get a local Mercedesbenz Commercial dealer re-line the shoes for you.

Re: Rear Brake Shoes and NSF Wheel bearing

Thanks. So bearing replacement is a labour intensive job and sounds like if something I started car would be of the road for weeks!

Once again thank you everyone for the advice, GWOA has never let me down - shame we can't say the same for some individuals (?) and as such I hope the club stays alive (comment to ongoing threads)

Re: Rear Brake Shoes and NSF Wheel bearing

As Rakesh has mentioned, the front bearing replacement is an extensive task and you will also likely need new seals and other parts. Perhaps, you may find that you also require the king-pin bearings.

The link below is for the official work instructions for the job, but there are also one or two YouTube videos you might want to look-up.

Good luck with the job.
