Has the pump been off?  What makes you think the pump timing is out?

Re: Pump timing on 603

Hi, to my knowledge the pump has never been off. She is pretty slow, I know they are plodders, but she could be smoother and there is a bit of hesitation. She drives like she needs warming up even when she is hot if that makes sense? I have changed all the filters so just wanted to check the pump. My local 'specialist' wants a days labour to check the pump and valve timing, sounds too steep to me? Cheers Mud

Re: Pump timing on 603

Be aware that engine is only 110Hp when it was new. so it's never going to be a racer, don't be afraid to rev it, if it's an auto adjust the changes so it changes up a bit later, (you do this with the actuator on the side of the pump)  loosen the 2 M6 bolts and tweak it clockwise/anticlockwise till the changes feel right.  If it's a manual hold on to gears longer.  This engine can't be driven on low down torque cos it aint got any.

Also check the sweep of your throttle linkage and make sure you're getting full throttle

Things to try without spending

Re: Pump timing on 603

If your pump timing is out; your engine would be difficult to start and if it did, the exhaust would be smoky (black smoke).

I would check if you are getting full throttle initially. With the engine switched off get some one to depress the accelerator pedal fully to the floor, whilst this is being done you could observe how the travel translates on the injection pump. If the adjust is set right, there should be no travel left on the pump; if the pump's lever can travel more, this will need adjusting out.

More commonly omitted is the valve clearance check, check and adjust as necessary. If the valves are found to be tight, you can experience power loss and low fuel consumption return.

If you do not trust your garage I would suggest looking for a Bosch authorised dealer to do the job for you. You could try some commercial shop garage as opposed to normal garages, their labour rates are not usually a rip off. And these "boyzies" are used to working on "wiesels". wink

Re: Pump timing on 603

How many miles has engine done. I have not studied posts and it is probably on there

My advice is slacken fuel pump bolts at frontx3 off

Just slacken them dont have them loose as oil will leak from pump o ring

Adjust pump to get fastest and smoothest running at idle and then its as good as it gets

Tighten pump screws x3 and check for any leaks

If your not happy take to be checked at a diesel specialist

100s of diesel pumps later this is the way i have set all my rebuilds

All have been pretty much dead on

Think of a petrol engine

Get t running smooth and then it goes a bit lumpy if you move distributor too much so knock back a tiny bit

If you are this far on you know what i mean

Diesel is the same just not as pronounced

Carefull listening to engine note and you will get as good as it gets. Not with a strobe light but just to hear engine note at its best

Its then as good as it gets if you know what to see and listen for

Any further tests will set it to standard and without proper kit you wont get it right as only sound can compensate for wear and chain stretch which alters timing of fuel pump

Have a play and try it, you wont hurt engine and when you achieve the best the engine is at its happiest and running at its optimum performance and efficiency

take note a little adjustment is a lot on a diesel on fuel distributor screw

Re: Pump timing on 603
Hi guys, thanks for the replies. She is manual so I can't adjust the gearbox. I have checked the throttle travel and its fine. The engine has done a genuine 165 k from new with one previous mature owner who treated her like a baby. The oil has been changed every 4 k religiously, She has never towed and has literally been babied. I might just be being fussy but I have read a bit about w124's being set wrong from the factory. I just wanted to check it was perfect but don't wantbtonsheel out a days labour for something that would seem straightforward? If anyone has seen a guide posted please share! Its a shame that everything is going electronic and old fashioned mechanical skills are being lost but there we are. Thanks Mud

Try this. It maybe a 606 but the principal is the same.

Re: Pump timing on 603

Hi

Have you sorted the issue?

Timing chain stretch is a problem too but on your engine thats been well cared for it wear will be negligible

There is a plug on the side of the pump to lock pump for removal and fitting

If crank pulley is spot on the marks this should line up perfectly

Look on the net for some pics as it will be easier than writing one of my long essays

I would say my om603 engine got going well about 3250 revs up

Below this it was a plodder and my 606 is twice as good even though people say they dont have low down torque like the 603

Maybe im just lucky with the set up i run

Dont be affraid to rev it a bit as mine ave better fuel economy if revved a bit hard to get to speed

Jason gds will advise you on how a good one runs

His pulls better than my old 603 did even with everything new. Perhaps it was because i was a passenger and not driving myself

It always feels faster when someone else is in the driving seat

Re: Pump timing on 603

If you drive it like a modern turbo diesel, will appear gutless though I think it is a great bomb proof engine. As fast as I know mine untouched since leaving the factory pump wise. Does like being revved , probably a small puff of black smoke if you floor it after driving it with moderation? Hills knock them back but revs make up for it,. Have you got the emissions print out from the mot? Mine always below 1%.? Notice on a damp day, runs better .

Re: Pump timing on 603

Just thought if it reluctant to rev, might be the initial fuel filter located in the bottom of the tank. Unfortunately you need a special tool to remove this and you will be lucky if you can undo it as threads tend to go. You could try a temporary fuel supply to a Jerry can etc see if any improvement, it's only the cost of some 8 mm fuel hose.

Thanks for all the suggestions. As usual you guys appear to have nailed it! Just needed to rdv her a bit more! Feeling a bit daft, but relieved! Thanks everyone. Cheers Mud
