Power when on lock
So I have driven a few G's now and quite a few exhibit the symptom of 'groaning' when applying power when you have some steering lock on.
What is that? Is it simply the drive chain working against the rear differential?
If you have a lot of steering lock its most likely the power steering
There is also a little oil filter in the power steering reservoir, two types of pas fluid, some is green , others red. MB should be able to advise the correct fluid with chassis no. Using full lock at slow speeds, off road etc can cause it to groan , or stall, modern stuff the ECU increases the idle speed to compensate for the extra effort
Should not be using 4x4 on a hard road on a 460, really bad for it possible front c joint? Or have had issues with steering column uj s getting stiff, if car been stood, give them a massive dose of WD40, etc
Yes you are correct, it is the rear crown wheel, not only turning the drive shafts but upon a turn it has to turn a mass of the differential hub and the gears churning in close ratio. Generally speaking even traveliing in a straight ahead position most rear diff's, I have noted are a touch more noiseier than they ought to be. Thank God it not a Ford Transit! they are worse for diff noise.
Best looked after is the regular bi-anniual oil change or is it every four years? I not sure at the moment. And ensuring the rear brake shoes are correctly adjusted. I know it sounds stupid but it is a stupid design flaw, the rear brake adjuster engauges applying the hand brake lever moving in reverse to keep the automatic adjuster within tolerence. I have read the manual three times and I am convinenced that is what I read. I need to read it again, I suppose.
One could try adding an oil noise reducer, I think it is a Wynn's product. It is a polymer additive designed to reduce friction and dampen noise.
Cure: Turn the radio on louder.
