peugeot p4
Hi just got a P4 2.3 diesel which i think is related to the G Wagen it is 1989 i could do with info on maintenace details or manuals available based in coventry.
Regards John.
Hi John,
The Motor and Gearbox on your P4 are Peugeot so in terms of those, I would be inclined to look for Peugeot 505 service manuals but most other mechanicals are the same as the G. One good trick to know is that the rectangular headlights are apparently the same as the 104 Peugeot.
For the G related stuff it would probably be a good idea to join the GWOA and get access to their manuals, and the accumulated knowledge base. Cheaper than most good manuals.
One other thing I would say is that if you thoughts new Mercedes parts are expensive - wait until you order the P4 specific parts from Peugeot!
Good luck with your project.
John
The fabric/plastic doors are unique 2 the P4 otherwise the body work looks like standard military G-wagen. There was a couple for sale earlier in the year from a dealer in I think Eastern England, I kept the e-bay link but as these things go can't find it now. I think that they can represent great value but I'd want to do something about the doors.
I think the main difference between the P4 and the 460 apart from the engine and gearbox is that the P4 has no front difflock only a rear one.
some military G's don't have the front locker, simplicity = less accidental mechanical damage for unsophisticated foreign squadies
Are these the type of "unsophisticated foreign sqaddies" in question?
A front diff might have been just the answer here.
They may have struggled with the off roading but being French they sat down to a wonderful lunch afterwards!
Hi John thanks for that not sure what would be P4 specific parts if the engine is 505 and the rest mechs and body is Mercedes.
John,
There are plenty of P4 bits and pieces that are different to the G like front and rear lights, Headlight surrounds Grille (although a G grille can be made to work, dashboard, switchgear, seats, doors, mirrors etc. I also seem to recall that the bonnet is slightly different also.
I would be looking for a 505 GTD motor which is the 2.5 3T motor (from memory). It was far superior to the 2.3 N/A. Not sure if the gearbox is a 4 or 5 speed but if you combine the 2.5 Turbo motor with a BA10/5 or a BA7/5 and you will be much happier on the highway - albeit nothing will save you from the noise!
John
2.5 Turbo went really well, though does do cylinder heads after 100k, non turbo seems to go on and on but getting rare now. BA 10 gearbox, lovely shift very fast gearchanges possible but now very rare.
May have to change to Mercedes engine and box, if scope to bolt in?

sorry a bit harsh when you consider the equivalent LR used by the British Army doesn't have lockers either
The windscreen is higher than the MB Wolf and the soft top can be opened in seconds rather than minutes.
