Does anyone know what problems might be encountered if trying to fit an om617a turbo 5 cylinder diesel sourced from an American car (300 sd I think) into an'82 300gd which is right hand drive .In particular whether it will fit with the steering column/box arrangement on the rhd 460 g-wagen.Thanks

If you go to this US Mercedes website:

http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum

Do a search on a user named 'Ghurka' (I'm not sure I spelled that right). He lives in India and drives the Indian version of a g-wagon with a 616 turbo. I'm assuming that Indians drive on the right since it was once a colony. Since the 617 turbo is just a bit longer, he might be able to give you the basic necessary information.

He can also tell you interesting facts about the Indian licenses who produce G-wagons and Mercedes vans there (although they go by other names).

I'm afraid that this will be of little use. The Tata Gurkha (and other Tata models) are only remotely cosmetically related to some Mercedes-Benz products. I think I remember that the Gurkha in particular had the OM616A but this is about all that it had from MB, apart from a bonnet higly resembling of that of a 190E (see pic). The latest TATA continue to use the same engine but also continue to be very cheap and basic cars. To compare the G-Wagen to these is almost highly offensive for our beloved trucks.

300 turbo in G

Just completed this operation. had to modify the exhaust extensively and rebuild the AC compressor mounting bracket to clear the turbo other wise fairly straight forward. I am now working out where to put an intercooler.
When its finished you are welcome to take a peek

The vehicle pictured is not the same kind of vehicle the person I referred to drives. I wouldn't insult anyone by comparing that vehicle to a G-wagon. The Indian version is visually identical to the G-Wagon (at least the ones I have seen here in the US). Here's a link to the mfg's website: http://www.tempoindia.com/htmlsite/proddtl.asp?catid=1&back=products.asp
