Good day All

I am rebuilding a non-turbo engine - new liners and pistons etc.

I have attached the pistons to the conrods, now I notice that not all the conrods are facing the 'correct' way (big end bearing shell locating tabs on LHS).

The conrod design looks symmetrical, but is it necessary that they be installed in a particular orientation? The conrods have not been worked on.

Thanks

Adrian

Re: OM617 conrod orientation

Looking on Google images for "om617 crank" it seems the rods are symmetrical with a horizontal split so as long as the rod caps are on the right way around relative to the rod shaft it should not make any difference... there are probably better OM617 forums to ask e.g. on saloon car forums.

Some pictures..

Re: OM617 conrod orientation

The MB manual talks about machining the big end and small end true to eachother.

In my case the conrods are installed on the original cylinder numbers, and the caps are on their matching locations on the rods.

I do not want to risk damaging things removing pistons etc if not strictly necessary.

I wonder if the balancing of the engine would be affected?

Thanks
