oil light on at idle 300GD
Hi all, I have just started seeing the oil light come on at idle. I have since flushed the oil and replaced with 10w40, also oil filter and O ring changed. Light still comes on. It is my daily driver and wondering should I take it off the road? My G is s 300Gd with after market turbo. I would in future like to replace the oil pressure switch with a pressure type. Have brought the G to local mechanic but was given the run around. Im working in the limerick / ennis area. Any fellow G experts around that could offer some advice?
tnx
Adrian
Ps
Could somebody tell me the part number for the óil pressure relief valve spring' that would suit my engine type om617 3ltr diesel w460 variety
For the part number of the oil relief valve please furnish your engine number or chassis number for Gavin to do that for you. Never heard of case of relief valves weakening on Mercedes Benz engines before so I can not see how changing this will solve your problem. Get oil pressure checked out before doing anything.
Now, your oil light; to be pedantic one ought to have the oil pressure independently verified by attaching an oil pressure gauge in case the oil pressure switch is faulty. Changing the the oil pressure switch as a matter of course is an alternative; the switch is not too dear to do this.
Other than that; firstly, on an old engine; assuming it is, you should be using 15w/40 oil. The 10w/40 theoretically should be OK as the 40 grade element remains the same.
Is the idle speed correct? Too low an idle will bring on the light. Try and wind up the fast idle knob if you have the W460; if the oil light goes out then it could be a case of re-adjusting the idle speed.
I am not sure if Diesel engine tolerances is the same as for the Petrols' but the minimum pressure of 0.7 bar is allowed at idle on a warm engine. Any less then that engine needs an overhaul.
Good advice. Do not waste money buying parts you do not need, take the oil pressure with a gauge and investigate the findings accordingly. Not really heard of many relief valves sticking.
Yes, thats the correct number £28.40+ vat from MBUK, they have 2 in stock

I think it is the way it done. But you need not worry that the turbo is sapping your oil pressure from the engine; the oil switch comes after the engine is fed its oil.
