Hi everyone, I've just bought a 1990 W463 300d lwb. She's left hand drive on French plates at the moment. Just need to figure out how to get her on UK plates so any advice would be much appreciated! The glow plug light also seems to work the wrong way round coming on after start! Just one of a number of issues!

Thanks Mud

Hi, the glow plug light coming on after it's started probably means one or more of the glow  plugs has failed. No big deal.

I think I saw that on Gumtree? Very rare in UK to get a 463 without the plastic wheel arches, looked nice, please post some pics. Agree with Russ about your glowplugs , cheap fix

Just make sure you get the engine nice and warm before u remove the glow plugs or you can run more of a risk of snapping in situ, then u have a bigger problem ! I know a snapped glow plug removal man ..... His name is DAVE !

There is a lot of information on this matter on the DVLA website, but basically:

  • Drive vehicle to UK on French Plates and French insurance (could be UK insurance on VIN, but will be more costly). Or arrange for transporter delivery.
  • Drive car straight home.
  • Arrange for MOT on Chassis VIN
  • If you are a UK Resident, you cannot legally drive on French plates. This should be OK -once-only for MOT (grey area), but after getting MOT do NOT drive the vehicle until fully re-registered
  • Telephone DVLA, explain what you wish to do and ask for UK registration application form. (NOT available on-line)
  • Go to HMRC website and create user account for vehicle importation (NOVA)
  • fill in details, of origin and purchase price etc.
  • As it's a used vehicle from EC country there will be no VAT or Duty to pay, but you still need to do this within 2-weeks of import or from when you decide to permanently keep vehicle in UK - Penalties apply for late notification... HMRC send the info to the DVLA and without it you cannot register the car.
  • Send off all your documents listed on application form, including French Registration document (UK insurance is NOT required at this stage, despite what it says- verified by phone) . You may need a Certificate of Conformity, from MB UK, if the EC approval codes are not shown on the French registration documents - which they should be. There will be a First (UK) Registration fee of GBP50.
  • You may also need to pay for Road-Tax at this stage
  • Wait 2 weeks for notification of new registration mark. You can now make-up plates and get insurance and drive vehicle..
  • wait a further 4-weeks for new registration document.

Re: New owner 1st G!

Yes Arnie is correct its no great problem importing a vehicle. When I imported a G from Germany I insured the vehicle on the vin number. The insurance company was fine but from memory they wanted the UK registration completing in 30 days. It actually took longer, but when I called the insurance broker, they where fine and gave me an extension of time to compete the process.

As Russ pointed out, the glow plug staying on after start usually signifies a failed plug.

Re: New owner 1st G!

Thanks guys, yes it was on gumtree and is exactly the simple rugged G i wanted. One owner from new and as honest as I've ever seen. I'm just about to send off the NOVA 1 form to HMRC. I will update with reg progress. I am awaiting a registration pack from DVLA. Not sure whether to source some arches or leave her as is. I do quite fancy some alloys but they do seem scarce and pricey! What I really need first are the extra boot seats if anyone has any leads? Thanks Mud

Re: New owner 1st G!

If you do the NOVA bit on-line, it will speed things up considerably.

It takes about 20 minutes, including signing up for new on-line account.

Good luck.

Just done this for my ML from Eire...

NOVA is a PITA... You can register online very quickly for the HMRC Gateway, but then you have to wait 7-10 days for an activation code to proceed........twice!!

Took me from early November until early February to complete the process...

They did lose my recorded delivery application for 7 weeks after the DVLA signed for it though!!!

Don't wish to do it again in a hurry...

However first drive home for the weekend tonight.....no amount of traffic ruined that drive ;0)

Hope you have better luck than me...

Advise is record everything, signed for if posting and chase every day as soon as their process will allow you!!!

Which ML have you got? I've had two, a 270 and a 500. No need to ask which one I preferred

Yes, if you try to link it to your HMRC  personal tax Gateway account. But, DVLA advised just to create a new login for NOVA only and this is all on-line and takes just a few minutes. All you need is an email address.

The whole process for my G400 only took 10 days to receive the notification for the new registration plate.

Sent docs to DVLA by Special Delivery, but although they received them the next day, tracking doesn't work.

Re: New owner 1st G!

May have changed then, as i had to create a Gateway account, (which i didnt have) would not let me do NOVA without

:( Unless i did something wrong!!!

Sent docs on 28/11, they admitted they got them on 2/12 they admitted they had lost them on 29/1 !!!

A few choice words got it sorted in 3 days from there ;0)

Re: New owner 1st G!

Nice 50+ bhp and a second quicker 0-60 than the 500. I could live with that. I liked the 500 but

always thought that it needed a bit more umph. I think my 430 Lexus is ok 'till I drive the SL again, so you can see my utter disdain of the 3 minutes 0-60 of my G300    smiley  Solution, get rid of the SL!!!!

Re: New owner 1st G!

Wish I'd known about online submission, I had already posted  the form before I read the update! I will try and take some photos this week. Thanks for the glow plug advice, are there any recommendations for replacements please?

Thanks Mud
