Hi All,

I'm John, a new member to this forum. Having recently invested in a 1989 SWB 280GE I now realise that I have no technical ability whatsoever and that 'DirtyGurty' as my kids call her is in need of some TLC that I am unable to provide!

After many hours on the internet and some reference to a Peter Russek workshop manual (all without success), I eventually stumbled across this site. It quickly appeared to me that there is more knowledge and ability here amongst the GWOA members than in the rest of the world combined and I am therefore hoping to find some kind-hearted people who share a similar love of G Wagens and who might be willing to impart some of their experience on someone less fortunate, or certainly less knowledgeable, than themselves.

The first problem I have involves a hole in the bottom of my engine where I suspect a drain plug used to be! My lack of knowledge is such that I don't even know what part of the engine or drive train it is nor what liquid is supposed to be in there. I will upload a picture when I am able to do so and I would be very grateful if someone could provide me with advice as to what I should stick in this hole, what liquid it should be filled with and where I need to pour it in??!

Thankfully, my lack of mechanical knowledge is only surpassed by my willingness to get my hands dirty and I'm a quick learner!

I look forward to meeting you all soon.

All the best,

John (DirtyGurty)

Hi, Here's a picture of the bit with the hole. I don't know how long it's had no fluid in it for! Any info would be very welcome!

Many thanks

Hello John, welcome to the GWOA,  don't worry about this hole it's just a drain hole for the bell housing, any oil coming out ofthere will be black if the rear seal on the engine is leaking or red if the gearbox input shaft seal or torque converter are leaking,  unless it's lots it's not really a problem ... except for your drive!!

I'm only near Blackpool if you need any help

Gordon

Hi Gordon,

Thank you for your prompt advice. It's nice to hear that it's not the problem tha II thought it might be. I was expecting imminent mechanical failure and a large bill!

I think I'll splash out the 25 quid a year membership just so I feel like I'm contributing something towards this fantastic resource and not just a parasite.

Thanks again,

John
