Hello, Firstly would like to wish you all a Happy New Year. Currently based in Nairobi, Kenya. Purchased my first G-wagen, Nov 2015 and I haven't regretted making that decision. Took me a long time to find, as there are not a lot of well maintained G-wagen out here (I stand to be corrected). Finally found one when a Swedish gentleman was leaving the country, very well maintained car I must say (couldn't thank him enough for that) the car had a few things to had to be sorted but nothing major. Been using the car to do long distance trips every chance I get, a lot of off roading as well but nothing too serious. Only thing changed on the car since I got it is the outside looks (cosmetics). Only thing I would want more from this car would be more power, have no complains with the engine it has especially when I go to the coastal area (no hills), but driving in the city I'm in or doing long distance trip up country (engine strains a lot, always on kick down and on high RPM). So this year have decided to do an engine upgrade, was looking and have been looking for a long time now at different options. Wanted a V8 but didn't want a petrol, the diesel options from what I've been has a lot of issues and didn't like the idea of a lot of electronics (was initially the route I wanted to go). I'm leaning more down the lines of the OM606 with the 722.6 combination. I have almost decided to go down this route but was looking for advice and input from all of you. I'm looking for hp, more importantly torque (hence why I want the diesel). A power range where I have fairly quick response and not a lot of lag. Regards, Quresh

Thanks Adrian,

Don't know why either. Been reading up and the range I'm looking for i can't get out of this engine, don't get me wrong been driving it around for a while and have a lot of love and respect for this little engine. I need more and from what I've read, I cannot get that from this engine hence why I'm going to do a swap. That's why I'm interested in the OM606.

Someone on ClubGwagen has just started on this project, not for the faint hearted!

I've done it but mine already had a 603 so was an easier undertaking.

Your other option is one of the 60x 5 cylinder engines found in sprinters or  c Class or Sanyong.

The 606 is an excellent engine.

Good luck.

Here's the link to the guy on clubgwagen, it looks a very similar project to what you are proposing. My impression is that one of the 60X 5 cylinder swaps is easier. Unless you get the 606 car sump fabricated to fit a G Wagen that's maybe the single largest cost 1,500GBP I think.

A few in SA have done this swap.

OM606.964 / OM603.972 G Sump from 300GDT 463 / 350GDT 463 is £839 + vat

OM603.931 G Sump from 300GD 463 is £339 + vat and will do the job OK

Thank's Russ,

Looking through all information. Is there a big problem with fabrication of the sump (disadvantage of doing this).

Sumps are alloy and very difficult to make  leak free when welded, Best to use that cheaper 603 which I presume needs only minor mods? Are there many donor 606 engines out there ?

As long as you get a professional welder to do it no problem. It just needs clearance from the front diff.

I've heard of people not bothering to modify it but you do run the risk of sump meeting diff in off road use.

I don't know the difference between the 606 and 603 G Wagen sumps.

The 603 fits with no issues. Some also replace the oil pump for the G specific one. I believe it has a very slightly longer pick up.
I used the 606 car pump. Again no issues.
