Hi guys,

just sold our classic range rover soft dash #02/25 25th anniversary, so really one of the very last built...and bought a 2006 G55 designo graphite metallic from Germany.

should be in home very soon. Woohoo.

question: where and who can look after my truck in the SW London area. Also for parts, where do you guys go?

note: looking for 19" wheels and front 3 or 1 slate grille. Any help tips welcome.

Re: New G55 owner

Well, there's MB in Brooklands and MB in Brentford, that I know of who are used to working on Gs.

Otherwise, there's me, but I'm more expensive. wink

The grilles come up often on German eBay as they are being removed from almost new G's for Brabus upgrades.

Regular service parts (discs, pads, filters etc) can be bought from ECP. Most other items will be from the dealer and not always as expensive as one might imagine.

(Let me know if you want to sell your existing wheels, if 18")

Re: New G55 owner

definitely will Arnie - i just dont want to ship abroad (had trouble last time shipping my 964RS BBS wheels to Sweden). So if you are local it's much easier.

I have ordered from Kunzmann new 19" AMG wheels...so depending on when they get here, and swapped, i can then pass/sell them on to you.

Re: New G55 owner

Ahahah it will take a couple weeks before its on UK reg. But for sure at some point in March. My guy is going to pick it up on the continent next Saturday and will drive it all the way back, that way if something is wrong, he'll have plenty of time to find it out. I've ordered some 19" AMG from Kunzman and now looking for a 3 fins front grille...updating a little, shame mine is an early 2006 rather than late: wouldn't have to change the grille. Any tips on where to get one?

Re: New G55 owner

Hey guys, any idea where I can quickly source RHD headlights - need them to pass the MOT.

New 19" black AMG wheels are on.

New 3 slates front grill will be mounted next Monday.

You might also need to swap the reversing light and the fog-light positions, depending on how fussy the MOT station is.

Re: New G55 owner

thought i'd post some news: well the G55 is a charm on daily basis, both my wife and i drive it a lot.

My wife in Central London, ride is a little bumpy...on par with my ex 964RS !!! and yes worse than my current 430 scuderia and 575 HGTC!

I mostly do the highway miles...90mph cruising, not so good in the UK due to road/tyre noise (sorry the highways here are in quite poor state) but on the continent smooth tarmac, what a charm.

Just did London-Deauville-London this weekend, averaging 62mph over 600miles total and 12.2mpg, not bad for a tank or insect killer (must have gone through 4 litres of windscreen wash ahahahah!)

Hi,

Put some G500 springs on them, I know some people did this here in the past. There was a thread on gwoa, hunt for it.

Regards

Re: New G55 owner

Have you got any photos of it with the new grill ?

To have averaged 60mph over 600 miles including towns you must have been well over 100mph in parts which would probably account for the 12mpg !!  smiley

Re: New G55 owner

If it's one of the newer ones, make sure the aircon is turned off when you don't need it. Former member Eddieneedamerc - found this little gem out just as he was selling his 55K angry. As gooch has mentioned you may like to try the 500 shocks and I found going to 285 on an 18 inch rim, smooth out a number of the pot holes we seem to be getting in the UK at the moment.

Re: New G55 owner

Yes, of course, set Aircon to EC mode.

Many people have replaced their AMG shock with standard G500 shocks for a much improved ride, and the G500 shocks are by no means soft. That's why you see the AMG shocks often being sold-off on eBay.

Re: New G55 owner

yes, but changing the shocks only does not give you the G500 ride (tyres/ springs). There is no easy answer to sorting the G55 suspension, the G63 suspension set-up could be a worthwhile try. Re aircon: these are automatic aircons, the capacity adjusts to requirement and on a 500hp car switching off the aircon should make no performance difference whatsoever.

Re: New G55 owner

Yes, automatic aircon in terms of temperature/ climate control, but if you switch it off (EC mode), you'll save on 1.5kW - 2kW of engine power and reduce your fuel consumption accordingly. This will make negligible difference when traveling at 100 mph, but when cruising at around 30 mph on a level road, the average engine power is only about 12kW and you can save 8% fuel, then. Just open the windows instead.

When they designed the G, I don't think they envisaged it traveling at more than 80 mph, so yes, the AMG is a compromise to be able to drive a brick at crazy speeds. If you want high-speed stability then you'll have to pay the price, both in terms of comfort on anything less that French-Autoroute-smooth roads, and in terms of 12 mpg.

In the US many people have reported good improvements in comfort by changing to regular, G500 shocks and they say that the later-version G55 shocks are also better than the earlier ones. However, not having a G55, it's something I cannot vouch for at first-hand.

Re: New G55 owner

I looked into possible modifications for the G55 suspension in 2010 and did not come to a solution.  Apart from general comfort the G55 has a tendency to develop a front-end shake ("stuckern" in German) driving on certain motorways. From the two people I have spoken to fitting G500 shocks gets rid of the "stuckern" but it is not a breakthrough. Similarly the Brabus adjustable system does not seem to be a significant improvement.  One of the owners of the G55 with G500 shocks has since moved on to a G63 which he describes as significantly more civilized, hence my G55 with G63 set-up theory (however I assume the gearboxes play their part as well).
