New to G Wagon ownership,  Just picked up a 1986 Dutch SWB 461 'wolf' that has had some work done on it.   Any classic issues i need to look out for.  Attached is a pic of the new addition to the family.   All the best ACQGW

Re: New to G Wagon Ownership

All G's are tough, the older ones the more so, limited electrics mean less to fail, watch for rust in the rear 3/4s of the body work, brakes that seize through not being used, whining prop shafts and rust on the left rear spring hanger. Steering dampers only last 50k but beefed up ones are an easy fit, some MOT testers can be fussy about steering link play. What engine is in yours, the 240d or the 300d, both slow but as you have a light weight roof and rear not so much of an issue. I like these a lot, well done

Re: New to G Wagon Ownership

prwales - many thanks for those pointers.

I have a merc 290 tdi engine in it, with a  five speed manual gear box - all put in by the last owner.

I will give the rear 3/4 a good look and remind the missus to release the hand brake.

When it was imported (into Canada) it had to be chemically cleaned.....sad  To do that they took the front seats out.....We are now having an issue getting them back in.  They slide onto the rails ok but don't seem to want to slide all the way back.  Any pointers?

Anyway, many thanks for your comments.  AQ

With regards to the seats, if they are the tilting variety, like on the SWB civilian version, then the rails have nylon washer, sliding-contact surfaces to reduce friction. However these crack and break-up with age and may block the runners from fitting back together. I think new washers can be either bought or made-up from sheet. try to unscrew the tilting base (4-bolts) from the floor and then re-assemble with the seat before refitting the whole assembly.
