Does anyone know if it's possible to get a new battery tray for my 1989 280GE - chassis number WDB46023327065496

It's completely rotted away - needed urgently........

Re: new battery tray needed

Hi Suzie

Unfortunately the answer is no!!! It only comes as part of a complete front Bulkhead Assembly at ££££'s

The best answer if you can find a scrap shell with a good tray and cut the tray and surround out and re weld in.

Axel has done one in the past and may help, but i am sure will not thank me for suggesting it!!

Looking at the pictures a patch repair is long out of the question...

I guess alternatives are possible if you don't care too much about it looking correct or perfection etc.

Stable doors and all that, but maybe an under-mat this time?

Re: new battery tray needed

Thanks for replies - have asked mechanic to make do & mend, he's going to cut out the rotten bits and fabricate something.  As long as it's watertight so my passenger will no longer need to wear wellies when it's raining, that's the main thing!

Cut the whole battery tray out, and fabricate a new one out of stainless,   fit & forget

Re: new battery tray needed

i think not having an imbecile do a restoration on it to 'original specification would be a good start ,sadly this Man is very persuasive and convincing. Hopefully his has been brought to a halt .#39;

this did not 'just happen' it takes a long while to rot so badly , a metal fabrication shop will be able to fold up a replacement tray and then carefully cut the old tray out and then weld the new one back in.

you can see where the tray has been painted around the edges hiding the huge hole with the battery, the passenger footwell and interior must be awash with water and rusty muck. terrible just terrible and just think people pay the bloke who oversaw this 'restoration' to go and do pre-purchase inspections !!!!!! the mind boggles.

even worse he thinks he is really good at what he does .

this repair is tricky as it is near lots of wiring and fuel lines and really involves taking the inner wing off to really get to the damaged area.

I hope you get it sorted ok but your present battery I assume that isn't leaking? Or over charging?

Re: new battery tray needed
The rubber strip that seals the edge of the bonnet to the scuttle panel Is probably missing , meaning rainwater is accumulating on top of the battery and gradually overflowing the electrolyte which slowly digests the battery tray. This is quote a common fault on g wagens and.needs to be looked out for.

Re: new battery tray needed
Just shows how you can own a G for 8 years and still learn loads from the forum. I always wondered why they have the bonnet so water can run off and, especially when you open it to check oil etc, you get loads of water onto the battery. I assume even a 460 should have a rubber strip along the engine bay scuttle? Which reminds me, I have got a spare door seal. I wonder if that will do the job.. Hope Susie is getting light at the end of the tunnel on her G! Simon

simon yes you should have a rubber strip along the engine bay scuttle

for some reason it only goes on the flat and not down the angled sides

Re: new battery tray needed

There is also a hole directly above the battery (on a 463 anyway) which should have a piece of tape over it to stop water draining down onto the battery

Hi Adrian Thanks for the info... I have ordered some aftermarket trim to go on the scuttle in the bay, but on reading this - especially the comment about not going down the angled sides - is yours on the bonnet? If so I can used my spare door seal trim for the bonnet as the rubber sealing gasket is at right angles to fitment - Shame its dark, just spent 2 hours trying to get the back door on right..... again :-). Time for another trip to the loft spares store.. Ta Simon

Hi... So where I first thought. Got 2.5m length of the right profile winging its way via eBay even as I type.. I'll renew the part round the airbox as well I think.. which also has some mouldy foam lining it, so will be taking that out and replacing it as well Ta Simon
